Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

Force surplus (Mgmt) GA

So, we were told our office was going to face a surplus. We are already only about 16 people maybe and at least 5-6 were retiring by year end anyway (subsidy). They cut 50% and all the ones retiring were surplussed and will be getting severence, EXCEPT ME! Told that it was performance based, so they couldnt justify cutting me, even though they knew I was leaving! So, basically I get screwed for being an exemplary employee! There AT&T goes again, driving the wrong behavior! Unreal. They could have offered MVO first. I am pi---d.

AT&T adjusting the number of workers based on how much work there is. Way to run a business.

I did inform my Director I was thinking about taking my retirement early due to my manager EEOC violations towards. The following week I was surplus by my manager for made up bad work performance. I did receive my 6 month severance pay and my pension.

Lessons here:
Never be honest about your retirement timeframe.
Give just 2 weeks notice just like the company gives us.

Don't need that many workers. Don't want people around doing nothing. Can always rehire later if there is more work.

The uninformed folks who think the folks being cut now are "dead weight" don't have a clue. So sad to read such ignorance.

The "dead weight" was cut over two decades ago. There have been reductions in mgt force nearly every year in every department since then. Either direct cuts or unfilled vacancies. You should feel sorry for the survivors who will be left to cover the work load.

I doubt there will be new processes, new tools, or a streamlined management that will competently cover whatever work is left.

But this is the price paid for an egotistical upper management: "We Bought Directv-We Will Pump Video Over The Network)". Then it went to ....

"We Bought Time Warner-We Will Pump Focused Advertisements To You Over The Network". Then it went to ...

Ooooops. Nevermind. We can't do any of that. Fire sale, anyone?

The BoD should be so proud. Stock price of nearly $40 per-covid in 2020. Now $24 today. Sad thing is: I'm not wrong.

A majority of those retiring were expensive dead weight and should not receive severence. Agreed that they are voluntarily leaving.

Sounds like Santones way of operating. T is rotten to the core, living off the fat that was built up over the past 125 years.

I agree that this doesn’t sound right. Why would the company pay a severance package to these employees who are leaving voluntarily? The whole point in taking away these benefits is so that folks will leave without having to pay them a severance.

Exactly. Makes no sense. They could have saved some money waiting til 1Q. But nothing they do makes sense. There are a minimum of 5 others retiring and they have been surplussed (as of Dec 1) and getting severence. Except me, I have been “excluded”

Shouldn’t there be layoffs in Finance given the monetary state of the company???

Makes no sense. Why would they surplus folks set to retire at year end?

Guess it depends what you do. They are sending all our stuff to other countries. India, Phillippines, Mexico City…pretty bad, since not too long ago, they claimed they were going to stop outsourcing so much….liars. Customers already hate us. They will be leaving in droves.

Finance. They could get rid of way more debt of the would cut “middle mgmt” and the so called “leadership” bonuses and incentives! Not the worker bees. Those up the food chain are out of touch. But they dont care. About us, the customer….just their bonuses and incentives.

AT&T has got to cut employee expenses given the debt load. Situations like this will be the norm over the next year. There are too many senior employees way overpaid for the work they do.

They claim, they cant falsify my “exemplary” appraisals over the last years. Makes no sense. I would be happy to go Dec 1 w/severence! Thats what you get for being a good employee for 30 years.
