They days were chosen (including the day for me) so that a reasonably large percentage of people just take the Mon-Wed and/or Thurs-Fri off without it being "forced". Since close to nothing will be happening on those days, best to just mail it in those days.

Great way to sc--w people out of several days of PTO. Not great to shaft employees who have vacation plans and run close on PTO days.

If everyone was taking their PTO instead of working partial days from home, then Cisco wouldn't need to force us to take PTO to reduce their liabilities (unpaid time off that's accrued and owed to employees).

Since everyone is WFH, why do we need these shutdowns? I reckon in the past it was to save on utility bills and cleaning/maintenance of the buildings.

While Cisco does save on utilities, etc. during the shutdowns, the biggest savings is getting rid of the accrued, but unpaid time off that the employees are hoarding. That's a huge financial liability Cisco carries on the books.

And, after having 14 calendar days off, who wants to come back for Thurs & Fri only to have the weekend off. They're probably betting people will take Thurs & Fri off too to make it an 18 day off stretch. I know I would, if I had enough PTO. And probably a day or two before the 23rd.

PTO is a liability on the accounting. Forced PTO is good for the books.

OTOH, Having Christmas to New Years with no emails is generally welcomed by the workforce.

On the other OTHER hand, 3 more days drains more liability off the books.

They probably don't want anyone in offices when they terminate 10% to 12% of the staff.

Security decision, but sh---y to take 3 days of PTO.

You’re right. But if you’re complaining in the US, we in Europe are now “strongly recommended “ to take NINE days PTO.

Cisco figured out years ago nobody was really working much those days off regardless of PTO. Now they make you take the PTO since they know you're just jack.ing off anyway.

Dec 23 - Cisco "Day for Me" - Company-Wide (no PTO required)
Dec 28, 29, 30 - Previously Announced Shutdown (PTO required for U.S. and Canada)
Jan 3, 4, 5 - New Additional Shutdown Dates (PTO required for U.S. and Canada)
