Thread regarding Ford layoffs

Why do they always value more wrong employees?

It doesn't matter to me anymore because I definitely intend to get out of here very soon. However, what was never clear to me nor can I understand is why Ford always values more those employees who deserve it the least? Isn’t it logical that a company would want keep its best employees?

@1esq+1dW9nX9p, as far as I've seen the "gsr 9/technical ll6" comes and goes over time. Back in the 2015 timeframe I was working with an area that was pretty heavy with "Technical Specialists" which was a tech ll6 spot so that the salary was in a range that wasn't too far below regional average, so when looking for another position in the same timeframe as SRD I looked at moving over to that area. While putting out feelers to find out the nitty-gritty on the open positions I found that ALL of half-dozen tech ll6's I knew personally there were gone from Ford, mostly after "choosing" to retire early once SRD was announced and anyone representing a high pension liability was likely to get chopped.

At the current time I only know of two people who were promoted up to a "technical ll6" at one time, but they both have to do classic management work now. So it's a nice dream, but seems gsr8 is the pinnacle unless you want to go to meetings all day and play politics.

It’s really simple. The employees that can’t do the work get promoted to management to watch over the people who can do the work. There used to be a technical grade 9 and an engineer or high tech worker could get the lease car. The only way to get beyond a grade 8 is to be a manager and managers don’t know how to do anything beyond go to meetings.

Because Ford’s stated values are not their practiced values - plain and simple.

It all starts at the top. If they really wanted their stated values to be practiced they would be. Look at how long known horrid behaviors are allowed to go on with senior leadership and Ford family knowledge.

In any large company these things happen. There are some good management and very bad ones too. I tell young people before you select a new position or job to pay special attention to who you are working for. Try to find those who's style you admire and want to work for. Second, I tell them action speaks more than words. Too many times an employee exceeds expectations and will not be properly rewarded for it. If this happens to often it may be time to move to another company. As for me I do not give my best effort to TVM. Not worth it nor rewarding . Why save them money only to be screwed

@1kcw+1dW9nX9p I believe you. A manager told me once, many years ago, that if we delivered a perfectly working solution, we would not need to go back to fix anything, and the client (government contract) would not pay for support next time. But if we deliver a flawed solution, our team would be fixing things at the client's location frequently, and the client would be happy and grateful for our "great" customer service.

I didn't stay long in that company. The idea of "planned obsolescence", or in this case, building design flaws, didn't resonate with me. I see it as larceny or fraud. Perhaps that's why I am still an Engineer and not a manager.

To add onto the above...

Why do someone once right, when you can pay triple to do it three times over to fix.

The people in management, are often those that shouldn't be in management. They are the weakest link within the company.

Simple, because old companies tend to be bureaucratic, and their management doesn't want to rock the boat. The best employees usually know their worth (higher salaries), do a very good job (showing the incompetence of others, including managers) and they are passionate about their careers (making managers afraid of being replaced with them). So all those managers that got the position by politics or friendship, are threatened by the best employees and try to get ridden of them.

Usually the company let go the best employees with the excuse of savings in salaries (even when the best savings would be letting go all those managers) or by making their lives so miserable.

Those who can, do; those who can't, teach; those who lie and cheat, manage.
