Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

My problem with new employees

I don't care that they have no experience, every single one of us had no experience at some point. I don't mind sharing my knowledge either. But I do mind that they can't take constructive criticism. Don't get offended and come at me with pale excuses - own up to what you did and move on. I'm so tired of having to go back and forth with somebody new and inexperienced who fu---d up but fails to admit it's even possible they made a mistake/something might have been their fault. You will not get far in life like that.

Most new employees know that this career/company is a daily Squid Game. This is no secret among the industry. My very own sister applied here for sh!ts and giggles and denied an offer while laughing at the DH in the process; based off my testimonials. From my experience, people peak at the 7-12 year experience range and then get very tarnished and bitter afterward.

Behaviour like this from new hires doesn't surprise me, its a product of the culture that they have created. An XOM career is a one-year contract, that's all any decent person can expect. Any intelligent person out of school who decides to work here will still live with their parents/roommates, commute in a carpool, save their money and apply for other jobs at the 6 month mark.

I agree with the 30+ employee. After 10 years of working 70+ hrs/wk and seeing the less than 30 hr/wk employees get promoted over me, I decided to learn from them - do nothing for 30 hrs/wk but bs with people, suck up to bosses, and criticize people who actually do work - i.e. ask why it took them so long. I’ve done this for the last four years and am getting higher raises, less time at work, no calls at nights or weekends, much better work/life balance. If they catch on, I might have to work or find another job, until then, it’s going great. This is the ExxonMobil way.

30+ years employee here, technical track. And why should they admit to a mistake? So that they get to watch their peers on the management track with far less technical acumen but with the gift of gab get all the raises and promotions while the technical people get to do all the midnight shifts and get their work usurped without credit? I say cheat, if you can, all you can, find ways to get better at cheating than the management track people, that's your only hope to get ahead. Nothing matters anymore, this is ExxonMobil today.

THIS IS A LAYOFF SITE!!! Not a complaining site about this and that.

I’m midcareer and this is a stupid post. You sound super precious about your advice. I’ve seen much older employees than me who had horrible idea and tried to force it on underlings (and got pissy when they correctly rejected it). I’ve also seen younger employees suggest good ideas I hadn’t thought of. Look in the mirror and realize you’re a tw-t.

The old employees have both dealt with and moved on from constructive criticism. The reason they survived.

This isn’t a problem with the new employees, this is company culture caused by the MLRP system. This is not exclusive to the new employees at all.

Probably just wary paranoia on their part.
There's no cause for paranoia in this company, is there?

Old employees are the reason we are where we are, not new ones.

Let's see how well the veterans take that constructive criticism.

You must learn it is no a stick, it’s a broom. They want you to sweep up as you walk.

Why would they admit mistakes when it’ll come up on PIP or be branded by it? Our culture promotes this behavior, can’t blame them

Imagine you are a new hire, who has to deal with a d-mb fu-k manager who rotated in to their role as a developmental opportunity and doesn’t know sh-t about what their doing other than pushing LPS and other garbage.

Oh man. Wait until you get a person with 5+ year experience who fails to admit mistakes. Oh wait that is most of my coworkers at EMRE

My problem with veteran employees is the stick in the a**. Good portion of them aren't that good. Master brown nosers

Makes sense why this company is falling apart
