Thread regarding IBM layoffs

A big ask?

Is it unreasonable to ask someone from PT timezone to follow ET hours for 1 month during critical phase of the project? To be specific... starting 9AM ET.

Work day typically gets over at 6p ET or sooner sometimes, and this person makes it such a big deal and makes it sound like they are doing team a favor.

Everyone has some life outside of a job. So there's always some kind of a commitment present in a life of a person.
And no matter how you slice it - it's not just adjusting sleeping hours. Egg. I'm in CET time zone, so right now I'm 7 hours ahead US ET. So if that would be me - I'd have to "start" at 5:00 PM my time and finish at 01:00 AM my time. And do that for whole month..
Not to mention - if that person is egg. located in EU country - a company must follow a labor code valid for that country. So if a request like this would appear - a manager of such person needs to check with HR if that's feasible and under which circumstances.
So it's not just that you asked and person should blindly follow.. even if he/she would be ok with that, there are also rules to follow..

I had to work with a person on North Carolina that used to set up meetings at 6am PT. Note that the guy used to leave work at 1pm PT since he has "family".

One day I had enough. I declined and sent a proposed invite for 6pm PT. He said "I cannot, it's too late for me". And I replied "Exactly. So let's find a time that works for BOTH of us". He never tried to get me on a 6am PT again.

Maybe you should all work on Pacific time.

Depends. I had a critical team member on the West coast and they absolutely could not make 6am meetings because they had children to get ready for school.

Some people have more going on in their life than Webex conferences.

Yes, my work balance is fantastic... I almost left IBM last year for a lot more money... I quickly decided it was the wrong choice. About 5-6 weeks vacation a year at IBM, at least 2-3 months of bench (aka doing nothing = more vacation), a pay that is good enough, sure I would definitely deserve a big bonus every year, but hey you can't have everything. When I work (billable) I really don't have to work hard, so no stress at all. My wife always tell me, people would ki-l me to have my job!! So who wants my job?

I am putting up my job at IBM for sale... starting bid $200K...

  1. 5 hours per day for work? I guess IBM does work life balance very well.

is it unreasonable to ask for 50% raise? 30%? maybe 20%?
you get the picture right? nobody works at ibm for the work part. it's for wlb.

if that person on west coast has any kind of dignity they'll leave. Market is hot and ibm is paying sh-t even compared to legacy companies like cisco, oracle etc.

I am in Eastern time zone… I never start working until 10am at the earliest, and rarely work past 4pm. You need to learn how to set boundaries.

I imagine this ask goes along with other asks like extended hours, weekends, taking on additional duties as other team members are RA’d. Maybe they’ve just reached their limit with asks. What is the real need?

For some people it is a huge ask, for others no problem at all. Depends on their life outside IBM. If you do it, strictkly stick to 6am-3pm and turn off the computer afterwards. And enjoy your afternoons!

I'm in ET and I don't start at 9. You're not even asking for core hours in your/my TZ. I have things I'm doing at 6am my time. E.g., doing 30 - 35 miles on my bike. I usually take a shower after that! Now let me ask you: what exactly are you doing between 6 and 9 am? Yeah.... I didn't think so. Get over yourself.

Don't assume they're "just shifting their hours" or "need to wake up a bit earlier than usual". As already mentioned, this team member might have other commitments you know nothing about.

It is a favor for sure but not that big of a deal unless that person needs to take of family members etc on a specific schedule. If it is only about adjusting sleeping hours then 1 month is reasonable but like I said it is a favor.
