Thread regarding IBM layoffs

Where's the "big layoffs"?

Several times it's been mentioned $3.5 billion or whatever set aside for restructure and layoffs, yet, it's Mid-Oct and we haven't heard of any 30K people cut or whatever the # was predicted. Starting to think it's all fake news. I still see fluffy middle managers in Marketing and a bunch of useless VP clowns in C&CS and Redhat Marketplace.

"Can't imagine layoffs in GBS anytime soon. Zero bench, projects starving for resources, very difficult to hire in this job market, etc. "

HR and Finance don't care about your complaints... Layoffs will continue across the board until the total number of employees will be under 200K. The next big layoff will be in Q1 2022.

So if IBM is struggling to hire due to short timers leaving for greener pastures, and the cloud (no pun intended) of layoffs/reorgs hanging over the company is causing a lack of interest, perhaps I should apply? I'm an ex IBMer who left on her own terms, but now getting close to retirement age. I could cruise there for a few years until retirement. Oh that's right, they are getting rid of older folk too! Is it any surprise they can't hire anyone?
Young folk leave, older folk get pushed out, those in between can get better paying jobs in more relevant companies. The only people left are those that don't know any better.

So a website and a good market cap are what defines a tech company? Give me a break. Most "tech companies" post 2000 are glorified websites. Actual tech hasn't really been invented in a long time. Granted, glorified websites done successfully apparently reel in gajillions of dollars hitting you with ads 24/7 while using your personal data. Hurray, tech!

Managers at ibm are blood sucking boomer as-----s who can't get hired elsewhere and have never worked at any other company.
Nobody wants to work for them.

Also ibm pay is like lowest in tech industry and they can't compete in any modern product categories. Ibm is just pretending to be a tech company.

As the person who talked about trying to hire new grads/professionals earlier, just wanted to mention: the reason we have hiring tickets is that we hired a big cohort of new grads 2 & 3 years ago and they are leaving in droves. We do a good job of hiring decent new grads and training them, but a terrible job of keeping them.

IBM Management and HR haven't done "big" layoffs for many years now ... but they still do LOTS of smaller ones to stay under WARN Act thresholds and avoid adverse publicity. Cumulatively, there are still large numbers of IBM layoffs, resource actions, forced retirements ... whatever you want to call them ... occurring on a rolling basis EVERY quarter so Finance and HR can meet their body count numbers. If your number hasn't come up yet, it's only a matter of time if you're over the age of 50. 😕

More details about hiring:

  1. Ibm has 3 divisions mainly now: services, infra, sw.

They can hire in sw division with title as cloud engineer etc.
But much difficult in other 2 BUs. There's absolutely no growth prospects in other 2 BUs, instead There's constant threat of layoffs.
So YMMV depending on the BU.

  1. Nobody with relevant experience is coming to ibm, even from small companies. Some groups have to hire contractors now but the arrogant ibm managers and hr's wont change the salary based on market because they don't know anything about scope of work.
  1. College grads with multiple offers almost always never join ibm so ibm doesn't get top college grads either.

But ya they can still hire clg grads because they have loans to payback, however idk if it's still enough.
Ibm has restarted hiring high-school grads as co-ops, this should explain everything to you.

re: hiring, I'm in a group with tickets in hand, trying to hire both new grads and professional hires. On the new grad side we get decent applicants and have managed to hire many. For professional hires ? Very few applicants, many just aren't good enough, many have found other jobs by the time we get around to scheduling an interview, or we interview and offer and they decline. Trying to hire anyone with more than 3 years of experience is really hard right now and almost always involves them declining our initial salary offer and forcing us to increase the offer.

I am not sure if big layoffs are coming because IBM has a MASSIVE hiring problem currently. They are getting 0 applicants on their posted jobs and can't replace a single person leaving/retiring in USA and even in India (yes they cannot pay market salary there as well!).

However, they will continue to cut in small numbers which are ignored by any local news and I think the vaccine mandate is probably another way to cull some more. Lets wait and watch

There have been plenty of layoffs and forced retirements this year. IBM is not going to publicly announce them.

Another Billion for 1Q 2022, so layoffs will come.

A lot of people were forced to retire on Sept 30th.

There have been stealth layoffs everywhere at IBM this year. Marketing, sales, Power, storage, IGF, and legacy IBM cloud have all absorbed cuts. This is aligning with AK’s strategy of just having direct marketing to a few hundred customers and letting the channel have the rest. We’ll certainly know the answer when Kyndryl starts trading on Nov 3rd. Pay attention to Kyndryls number of active employees. IBM in the past has overstuffed the selloff (Intel servers to Lenovo) and let the receiving company deal with the bad news. Given Schroeter’s past reputation, does anyone think IBM will not repeat this move.
