ExxonMobil's $1.1M tax abatement with The Woodlands Township terminated

The Woodlands Township terminated $1.1 million in tax abatement agreements with ExxonMobil on Oct. 11 after the company said it would not be able to maintain the required number of staff at buildings it occupies in The Woodlands’ buildings at Hughes Landing.

Community Impact Newspaper previously reported that the corporation had failed to meet a requirement to have 470 employees at one building and 960 at another building in Hughes Landing as of the January reporting period. The company had resolved a default on the agreement by moving employees where needed to fulfill the terms.

Kevin Gerrity, global strategy manager at ExxonMobil, spoke at a special Oct. 11 meeting of The Woodlands board of directors, which included a closed executive session discussion.

“We entered the tax abatement agreement a while ago. ... With our recent economic financial results for the corporation, we are going through significant shifts with a focus on reducing costs,” he said.

Gerrity said canceling the tax abatements would give the company more flexibility to move employees between its various facilities.

@rnx no fraud. Head counts at HL were tracked by badge swipes, not company directory.

the executive who ran the campus project was pretty transparent (I heard it from his own mouth), that they projected a long term reduction in the US workforce. The campus real estate is big enough to build a few more buildings if the long term strategy changed, but they didn't want empty campus buildings so they built it to match what they projected the 30 year US workforce to look like.

They believed it would be a long time before that number was reached, and so they leased Hughes Landing. It was a smart decision at the time, and then accelerated thanks to a global pandemic. Nothing terribly newsworthy here, IMO

The original campus design in 2012 was for 10k people when we had in Houston 12K and XTO at about 3k in FW and other locations. The plan was to shrink the company to 10k in 10 years. XTO was not included in that 10k but HL was rented with the idea EMIT would mostly go overseas and USP in GP8 would shrink and then be moved to campus in 2018. Things happen quicker than planned. W4 for EMDC LNG was over built so USP came after all and FW moved here in 2018. The incredible shrinking of the company is about 10 years sooner than planned. Thanks DW!

My office has been listed as HL my whole time but I’ve never seen the building.

I was told that EMHC was designed during a phase that EM was shrinking. But, by the time we moved there, the trend had reversed and the number of Houston based employees had increased and of course it continued increasing. This was the reason that we had to lease space in HL.

I never understood why the company wanted/needed leased space when the campus in Spring was being built. They were trying to get out of all the leased space all over Houston.
Especially knowing the Spring land was big enough for all the needs. Crazy

Wasteful spending.

They will also pay $4.4 million to Montgomery County in back taxes for failing to fulfill the abatement.
EnronMobil needs all the corporate welfare and subsidies it can take to pretend to contribute to the communities in which we operate - until it doesn’t.
Tax payers are suckers for subsidizing ExMob.

Most informed people at HL have known unofficially for about 6 months that everyone was moving to campus. It’s been mentioned here several times as well. Nobody knew when we would be moving until recently, but everyone knew plans had been drawn and approved for what it would look like when that happened.

Never want to lose a tax write-off or subsidy, but this was a barely a tick on the dog's tail.
All the shuffling was pretty funny. oh so pretty.

I work under XTO and we were moved to the main campus back in August from Hughes.

They have been lying about the HL count for a while. I know several people who were listed at HL but really residing on Campus. I’m no rocket painter, but I think that is called fraud.
