Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

Ball park numbers, How many new hire (0-5 years) geoscientists or in general have a potential of Cl34?

I want to know if the company is just dangling carrots in front of us.

Any employee that is less than 45 yr old and thinks they have a shot at cl34 if not already cl30-32 at age 38-43, has already died from drinking the kool aid. This metric is stratosphere of only a early Id few. In the meantime if you are top quintile of technical performers and bounce in and out of important project team and or management roles, you may reach remote hope of a rare few making cl29 by age 45-50, but most top at cl28. Of those that reach cl 29, only about 1 in 20 may see cl30 exec promotion under the old stp system. In the new stp system it looks like 1 level lower cl is adjustment. So vast vast majority of technical folks have no hope of ever being more than cl27-28. The fastest technical track promotions inUpstream I have ever seen for the 100+ STP consultants or chief levels is is quickest folks were Cl30 by age 48-51.

OP, not only that those are just carrots, but they are totally rotten by now.
Geoscientist at CL34 used to mean VP or President in the Exploration Co. Of course, the chances for a new hire to get there were one in many, many thousands, as others have said.
Remember though that what everybody can tell you is about the old EM, when we had an Exploration company and a certain method in the madness.
Now Geoscience is in deep disfavor in the corporation; no more Exploration Co. and top Geoscientist reporting to a President who knows nothing and couldn’t care less about Geoscience.
Now the idea - the corporate “strategy” - is to have all work done by people with two CLs lower than in the past. Even if you make it into the hi-po fraternity, you’re going to be fighting for a shrinking pie. In fact, if the classic system of (mis)management at EM continues, soon there will be no pie at all. Imagine yourself at about age 40 as an EM lower manager out of work. Your technical skills, if you ever acquired any, will be valued at zero. As a manager, everybody will laugh at you: here’s one of those who drove the famous old company into the ground!
So they can dangle whatever in front of you, CL34 or whatever, it’s worth exactly nothing.
If you want to continue in Geoscience, try your very best to acquire real technical skills (very difficult these days) and then be ready to move on.

For every new hire that eventually becomes a vice president, there are 3000 tombstones in the cemetery for employees that tried and failed. Good luck on making CL30+

Chance of a new hire making CL 34 is about the same as being struck by lightening and a meteor at the same time. If you are ruthless, a more realistic goal would be to make 30 by retirement

Supervisor here,
Potentials are illogical for most, the ones who get spotted and groomed are extremely few, probably a pool of <100 in a company of 70,000.

Hint, you need to be a bachelors, rude and arrogant, dress and speak well, follow orders and force othets to do the same, essentially be a good salesman with zero substance who can lie and cheat and have no conscience.

This is unofficial. Its very well reflected in ALL senior leaders. They genuinely do not care about emoloyees and I am disappointed as a supervisor how powerless I am.

Lastly, willingness is an official criteria for senior management. Because not everyone is willing to sell their souls.

Anyone naive enough to think they'll make 34 is naive enough to sell his soul.
That's the point of 'potential'.
You got to internalize it.

@OP You're looking for a "future" in a sunset company/industry. Need I say more?

From my understanding, everyone under 5 years experience is a CL 29. At the 5 year mark they reevaluate your potential to either 29 or 34. And I was told to split is about 30% CL34 and 70% CL 29. This was established this last year or so. Historically, you could have had a higher or lower CL in the system prior to 5 years experience.

I had an epiphany about XOM recently: it is all stick, no carrot.
Rule #1: you don't have to improve anything, just don't f*ck it up.
Rule #2: see rule #1
And yes, I've stuck my neck out & improved things without breaking rule #1
