How hard is it to move up the ranks in underwriting? Have people stayed in the same position without a promotion or raise for multiple years? I would hate to do 10 years of work just to only become a senior uw after…
And what’s a typical raise here? Is 3-5% the norm annually?
What's the starting salary for underwriter and senior underwriter? I think you only get a max 10% pay bump when you jump one grade level. Claims level II/grade 17 is roughly $65,000 base plus the bonus part.
The “raises” suck.
Yeah it would be better to make $250k a year doing nothing.
If your goal in life is to be a member of the professional managerial class, you need to adopt an air of superiority. I
mean, you’re already sh** on the job you’re proposing to do anyway, so it should be pretty easy for you. Pick the most competent member of the team you’re on and make that person you’re mentor. And then, constantly question what they’re doing. Not publicly, you don’t want the person to know, but to your boss. Undermine that person as much as you can.
Use corporate speak to propose vague ideas about streamlining processes or whatever corporate buzzwords/terms are in vogue now. It doesn’t have to be real or make sense because it won’t ever be implemented.
Talk constantly and TALK LOUDER THAN EVERYONE. Your boss should always be hearing your voice. ABT—always be talking!!! This is what leadership is about. If you say something stupid loud enough, it becomes the TRUTH.
And ask tons of questions, even if the questions are stupid and the answers obvious. This is a good way to ABT and to attack your competition, too. Just questioning what someone else is doing, even if what they’re doing or saying is right, is enough to make your boss start questioning your coworker’s competency.
Don’t waste time doing a bunch of work. The work is really beneath you. The worker bees do the work. You’re constantly questioning and coming up with ideas. Other people implement the ideas. Again, it doesn’t matter if have no ideas. The perception that you have ideas is what’s important.
Remember that person who said not to specialize but find a niche? Doesn’t that sound smart? Did it matter to you that it didn’t really make sense? F no! Find your niche! That’s the kind of thing you’re going to be saying ALL OF THE F** TIME.
And this may seem contradictory but you also have to be the nicest person on the team. You’re not acting superior, you are superior. And all of our betters are really nice people, if we’re being honest. That way when you get promoted over everyone, most people will think you deserved it.
You can’t overdo it though. You have to get to know the people who matter and what they want to hear. You’re kissing their a* but like, a lot of people in senior mgmt here don’t think they’re susceptible to flattery. They are, but you don’t want to point that out to them.
Finally, keep a framed photo of Pete Buttigieg on your desk or in the background of your webcam. It’ll keep you on track.
Senior UW with 10 years.. you still are doing the dirty work. They just give you glorified titles like senior or executive UW to make you feel good about yourself.. you’re still doing the same thing as a kid who graduated from college just with maybe more complex accounts. Be an UW for a few years and grab those leadership positions, otherwise you’re going to be doing the work that none of upper management would wanna do for the rest of your life. UW is a good gig don’t get me wrong, but the amount of work behind it for the little pay / bonus?? While leadership just sits there in business meetings and forces you to fulfill quota? Nahh I’m good. I rather but up in the meetings getting paid 250k+ while sipping on a martini. DONT let anyone tell you that what your doing rn is good enough cuz they’ll just cut you out and grab a college kid for cheap and he/she will do the same work as you did within 3 months of training
You can expect to get a raise of 3-5% if your in good terms with your boss. Promotion idk.. you can work really hard and never get a promotion. I’ve seen incapable / d-mb people rise up the ranks who have no clue what they are doing.. so don’t think you have to be so technically smart or become a specialist in ur area.. That’s actually how you prevent yourself from moving up, you become a specialist and are viewed as that. Talk to other departments, ask around and move into a different niche.. that’s how you move up and stay within the company.
I’m currently an UW and i plan on moving into various departments through time. So don’t lock yourself up into one line of business. I’m also pi---d to see how all the executives are all related or friends.. they then slap you with some fancy words and terms to show they are capable or the role but it’s just BS filler words lol
Look, I work in claims but I can tell you that promotions and salary rise are like in any other company, it depends by:

Unless things have changed dramatically they don’t do annual raises. The bonus structure is also difficult to get full as well. RUN AWAY RUN AWAY!!
Sr underwriter with ten years experience is a good gig if you can get it.
If you are related to the uppers....you will advance. The only other way to move up is if you have a special talent that BLOWs them away.....
Yeah so basically you’re an uw forever.. no raise, bonus if you’re lucky. No promotions. And guess what? You’ll just get more work and more responsibility for the same price you came to company at. Do 1-2 years and go grab that promotional role at another company.. or try to switch departments within AIG. Idk how successful people were in moving into different departments within and getting the raise/promotion. Maybe someone can state that route as a better option?
