‘Unlimited Vacation Scam’

Curious to hear if anyone else is concerned at losing R&R and WB in states that allow rollover if you will qualify for ‘unlimited’ vacation in 2022, if you’re still around. Seems like another ‘get the liability off the books move’, kiss goodbye to payout if let go and probably never be able to take the hours you would have earned based on tenure as they’ll be working you too hard. Questionable legality too.

I was told in a team meeting in mid November that my role now qualifies for unlimited time off. This is BS that we were not told earlier about the fact our roles were changing. THE COMPANY KNEW because tgey highlighted it in the benefits booklet. They did not want people to take the time they had earned. Yes, Frank really cares about people. Smh.

It used to ask myself why more leaders of companies haven't adopted the "unlimited vacation" scam. Almost all studies have shown that employees working under such a model take far less vacation than they would otherwise.

The answer is obvious, because it's the same answer as to why so many corporate leaders are against work from home. The management mindset in most corporations is deeply rooted in the mistrust of employees. They believe employees will take advantage of anything. They believe employees are taking advantage of WFH (despite inarguable evidence to the contrary) and they extrapolate that to the unlimited vacation model (which also has inarguable evidence to the contrary). That mindset is nearly unshakable across many, many companies. We're only starting to see some movement on unlimited vacation because it truly does result in realized dollar savings (no liability on the books). Employers know darn well employees will hesitate to take time off if they haven't officially "earned" any on the books. Most employees will be petrified, not wanting to be the one who stands out come RIF time.

No thanks. I'd rather keep earning vacation the old way. I agree to work x hours and the company agrees to give me y hours off. No arguments or comparisons to co-workers. We each earn our allotted time and enjoy it as we see fit. All nice and tidy.

Unlimited PTO is a scam everywhere, not just at this company.

First because they make it really hard to actually take any time off.

Second because you can't take any of it when you leave (voluntary or not) because you don't "have it coming" or "earned it".

Only Fiserv wins with unlimited especially if you live in a state where they have to pay out when they let you go.

So i take it some positions that previously had specific hours for R&R and well being were reclassified as "unlimited time off"?

If so, yes, it is scam as you will not take the time ofv you have earned.

The culture at Fiserv is changing and not for the better.
