Thread regarding IBM layoffs

Where are those big layoffs?

Now you are finally getting the point. Everyone keeps asking, where are the big layoffs he appropriated billions for? Its exponentially cheaper for IBM if you leave. Between the mandate and forcing people back to the AK office will get what he wants. A mass exodus that will reduce the cost of RAs coming in 1Q.

BTW, if the vaccine is "useless" why are the unvaccinated getting Covid at 10x the rate of the vaccinated?

Apparently the "You can get Covid from 5G" was half correct .. it was just the 5G part was wrong .. it should be "You can get Covid from Fox News"

" These COVID vaccines however, clearly do not. I can personally attest to that, as I contracted it several months after this useless vaccine."

Imagine being this ignorant about how EVERY SINGLE VACCINE EVER works, while simultaneously having such strong opinions about it. Amazing.

It is hard to know what is going to happen at IBM, vaccine mandate wise, but there probably is a damned-if-you-do and damned-if-you-do-not aspect to this. If you enforce mandates, you lose people, if you go back to work and don't have mandates, you potentially lose even more. But those not Vaxing probably are just opening up themselves to early termination.

I can say this for Poughkeepsie (New York, USA), fixing the buildings (increased circulation, spacing, partitions, etc.) because they are fairly old would be expensive. The new open office (Agile work environment) spaces are a nightmare during a pandemic, plain and simple, though ironically, IBM has a lot of excess old office space, and some half empty buildings, they could go back to single office pretty easily, form factor wise. But not perhaps the air circulation systems, those are so old that they were falling apart before the pandemic, there are probably cruise ships with less problems. Europe is less a problem because of the rules there for external windows.

Anyway, that's why I don't see IBM going back, in-person, except for a few instances where people are working on hardware or manufacturing, and have to. Most of the meetings were on Cisco Webex anyway (sort of like Zoom, but worse), due to the international aspect of the workforce. You have development spread over the USA, Germany, India, and so forth, support there plus Japan and France, manufacturing in USA and China and Korea, sales & marketing & customers everywhere. If you do not go back 100%, you save having to fix the buildings, so you save money.

Granted, IBM may still mandate vaccines, and those going unvaccinated may put themselves at risk of being terminated. IBM would probably get much cheaper medical rates by requiring mandates, so that may be a factor in all of this. And those that resist can probably be terminated more cheaply, if IBM was looking to downsize more anyway. Some of the development budgets are probably a shambles, with the run-up in development salaries, and just general difficulties getting new machines out and sales back up, chip shortages (selling off the Fabs looks at this point to have been pretty stupid). So refusing to vaccinate could be a long walk off of a short plank. You would be giving them "with reason" aspect of the termination, probably no termination bridge or anything. And they might lose even more people if they don't mandate and tried to go back in person. With New York's COVID numbers kind of in the dumper, nobody much is going to want to go back without a mandate, plain and simple. Austin's COVID numbers are better, but IBM does not own the buildings there, unclear of the landlords would be willing to upgrade/update, at least without a big rent increase.

Time will tell.

Here is the New York Times article on how you are 11 times more likely to die from COVID if unvaccinated:

https://www.nytimes.com/2021/09/11/world/the-cdc-reports-that-unvaccinated-americans-are-11-times-more-likely-to-die-if-infected-the-week-in-covid-news.html

and looking at the USA, the current number seems to have gone up to 13:

https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2021/us/covid-cases.html

although it does seem logical that Omicron might change those numbers some, nobody knows for sure just yet how much.

The vaccination stuff has gotten unfortunately pretty volatile politically, so this post may get a lot of down-votes and "fake-news" sorts of responses, but here is a link to a similar Wall Street Journal article:

https://www.wsj.com/articles/unvaccinated-people-11-times-as-likely-to-die-from-covid-19-11631308672

Says pretty much the same thing as the NYTimes, and is more conservative in terms of its viewpoint.

Anyway, the number is not 100 times more likely to be in the hospital if unvaccinated, but more like 5 times, and 11-13 times more likely to die.

@3ijl+1e4bOj0t: The CDC is a US government organization and has not exactly proven themselves lately to be trustworthy or neutral (just follow the money). Got any independent scientific verification. HINT: Try a few of the studies coming out of Israel.

"Prove it! Show the study"

https://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/volumes/70/wr/mm7037e1.htm

Meanwhile, that report that claimed heart problems were widespread? It's been tagged with an "expression of concern" (first step towards retraction) because it contains no data, only a handful of anecdotal stories.

The entire anti-vax nuttery is built on repeating the same lies and half-truths over and over, combined with an astonishing level of ignorance about how every vaccine you've ever taken works. No wonder IBM is CTD.

@2fym+1e4bOj0t: I'll ignore your ignorant drivel about people whose political ideology you disagree with. That speaks for your lack of character all on its own. Regarding vaccines - yes, they do work. These COVID vaccines however, clearly do not. I can personally attest to that, as I contracted it several months after this useless vaccine.

It used to be that intelligent people worked for IBM. That is obviously no longer the case, given the comments the antivax numbskulls post here.

Vaccines save lives. Stop drinking the alt-right Kood-aid or hiding behind your wing nut “faiths” unless you want to die or harm others around you.

Case in point: Televangelist and ardent antivaxxer died this week of Covid. And no number of prayers saved him, nor do they ever save anybody.

"When you become ill - or worse - from a myocardial infarction (or host of other side effects brought on by the trial jab)"

You are 100 times more likely to be hospitalized or die from Covid without the jab. Almost everybody currently in hospital is unvaxxed, even more so in ICU, and more so again for those dying.

And there is no "trial jab". It's very telling that the anti-vaxx nutters keep repeating the same debunked lies over and over. Not a great indicator of critical thinking skills.

So YES, I will be happy to see the backs of those people who think that they are somehow smarter than every doctor, virologist, researcher, and public health expert on the planet, and mysteriously in possession of secret knowledge about the vax unavailable to all the actually-qualified people.

"anti vaxx nutters". When you become ill - or worse - from a myocardial infarction (or host of other side effects brought on by the trial jab), I will not laugh, I will pray for you. Fear makes people do a lot of things that are not in their best interest.

They would never say you are being let go because of your exemption. You will be RAed because of changing business needs. But rest assure your exemption made you eligible for "participation". And they need 7 months to prepare for 30k+ seperations.

It will be a lot harder for HR to fire you now that you have a religious exemption. They have to then prove you aren't being discriminated against. It will cost a lot more to fire anyone with an exemption.

I haven't gotten mine yet.

That’s weird. I was told I’d be gone by December 8th and HR needed two months to get rid of me. Now they need an additional 7 months? It’s not going to happen.

No doubt that is probably true. Have known all along that requesting an accomodation would likely put a target on my back. But there comes a time where you just have to stand up for what you believe in. So I can live with it. They should never have forced people to choose between their faith and their income.

You have put yourself on the 30k+ to be RAed. HR needs 7 months to prepare for that many separations.

I received an e-mail Tuesday evening about it. It was a generic e-mail and everyone I know who requested one received it. I guess it could be broken up by how early you submitted it, or base on your location.

Arvind said they were going to basically approve all of them assuming you were sincere.

Accommodations were already made to just about everyone that requested one.

The most common accommodation is to work from home exclusively through the end of June 2022.

I would suggest you watch AK latest office hours… he stated the date of Dec 8 is gone and that everything is pushed to Jan 4… and even that date he said that probably some exceptions will be made for people working from home as an example.

So as usual, AK is full is sh-t.

Personally, I believe the RAs are on hold as the company waits to see how many will leave due to the vaccine mandate (12/8 is next week) and how many will leave in 2022 when asked to come back to the office at least a few days per week.

In my area, we have so many people retiring (or going to part time as a transition into retirement) that I do not think there will be an RA.

There will be some RAs. Unlikely it's this year. 1Q is usually active. But, with inflation like it is, and especially if it stays on the north side of 3%, IBM won't need layoffs. A couple of years with no merit for many, GDP was wiped out years ago, and stock only for the rarefied elite -- people will have to leave in droves to keep up purchasing power.

Can only speak to GBS, but given the number of voluntary resignations, unfilled open reqs, no bench, and current project demand, zero chance of any layoffs there.
