Thread regarding Thomson Reuters layoffs

If I'm guaranteed a severance, I'll volunteer to be laid off

I know many people with my amount of years at TR who were extremely satisfied with the package they received a few years ago. If I can get the same deal they received, it would be a no-brainer for me. The only worry I have is that they've cut the severance and other parts of the package (like unused vacation time, for example). I can just pray that it remained the same and that my turn will come soon.

All the coworkers I knew that were Laid off in 2021 landed jobs with 20% + pay increase and much better benefits, health premiums some have for $10 a paycheck, I didn’t even know those companies existed.
Layoffs were the best thing that happened if you ask any of those that were let go. And heck no , nobody is telling TR a they got new job aka collecting severance while working new job. TR is so in a chaos there is no way they could ever find out.

Laying flat

Learn it and live it. A companies job is to maximize profit. That’s by keeping wages low. There is no incentive to pay you more even if you produce more. They have the leverage. Take that leverage away. If you get the same raise/wage doing the same level of work, then why put in extra effort. Do the minimum.

Response to KK: It's ridiculous. This corporation has us jumping through hoops and wants to set us up maybe not for failure but for not ever being good enough. Why bother going the extra mile when the bar just gets raised higher and higher? Tried looking for that ridiculous career advancement flowchart the other day and it's like looking for a needle in a haystack. Mind games. I just work these days to pay bills while keeping an eye out for something better.

Just had my review today. Another year another 3. As usual was told that my performance was good but the bar has been raised. Some years I deserve a 3, some years I don’t. But this year’s ranking really rankled me. I put in 2 1/2 months of 10-12 hours days in the 4th quarter, volunteered for projects, covered for employees who shut down at 4:52PM. I put my head down and work, make sure all the i’s are dotted and t’s are crossed, had to cancel PTO bc of coverage issues. But it’s a new year.

This year I’m working for myself. They will get 40 hrs a week. Nothing more nothing less.

The change in severance package was a fear for me as well. Luckily I was picked during November 2021 layoffs and no longer need to worry. Best thing ever after 40+ years.

Severance is 2 week per year work capped at 52 weeks. If you get another job before it ends you are supposed to tell TR so they can stop your severance payments.

Not sure how they find out if you get another job. What if it’s a part time job at 10/hour compared to your previous full time at 50k and up?

Either way I didn’t take it when I was offered it. Choose to stay. I’ll milk the cow as long as I can

I doubt that they'll offer the voluntary separation packages again (last it was offered, it was under the last CEO, JS); with the new ELT under McKinsey, they're much more pinchpenny and shrewd with the severances on the attritions. They're banking on putting as much work and pressure on the remaining cogs to the point where they break and quit on their own, thus management will not pay any severances. I've always thought that surviving the annual Thanksgiving attritions was being fortunate, but those who were "job actioned" a couple to few years ago are the ones who are fortuitous.

@OP+1eC5VwLl - if you quit, and you're in the US, you get your unpaid vacation.
