Why would anybody accept a promotion to team lead at Sam's right now? They are breaking their backs to keep this place running while severely understaffed and they don't even get paid well. Who in their right mind would take a deal like that? Is there something I'm missing here?

I left because of that very reason. Living life at Costco now.. 😂

You got that right. Managers and leads should switch roles for a year so leads can have a break.
