CL versus Hay

In the Hay system, know-how, problem solving and accountability are factors that determines the Hay points. This is a well know system used across industries. Can someone explain CL matches up to job skills outside of XOM? Or is it a made-up system to promote favorites?

CL levels stopped being posted early 2010s because workers were starting to ask HR and supervisor uncomfortable questions about why so and so were CL xx and they were not. People wanted to know what criteria was used to determine advancement and HR/management could not or would not answer the question so tried to hide it so they won't have to.

At other competitors I worked at you could tell what someone’s salary grade (equivalent to CL at XOM) was based on their official title. Like associate engineer, engineer, sr engineer. Another one was refining engineer 1, RE 2, RE 3, Advanced RE, Sr Advanced Refining Engineer, and Principal Engineer. Everyone knew what Salary grade operations jobs were. I think the whole secrecy issue stems from having no internal job postings.

We used to positively share promotions in the UK on official notice boards. Then a few years ago it all became super secret. Who knows why.

Why are CL promotions so secretive? Most companies recognize promotions. Coworkers should be able to say ‘Wow, he/she deserved it! I’m happy for them!’ And managers are held to account for promoting people who are respected and talented, as the rest of their team is aware of the recognition and makes judgements as they see fit.

Get a CL bump here, and you are cautioned to keep it a secret. You cannot even share the good news with family without cautioning them that it ‘cannot get out to coworkers.’

Does this happen at any other company? Interested to hear it from experienced hires.

Made up system that once served Exxon well but sadly the system is now corrupt. No longer a meritocracy as it once was, reflecting the true talent and skills of the folks behind the CL rank. Now it's all about the 'sponsorship' aka who stroked my ego and made me feel like a god or who 'looks' like management. The result is folks with high CLs that are completely incompetent for the task other than making powerpoint presentations, using buzz words and maintaining this corrupt system by promoting more of their incompetent buddies
