Manager Who Does Not Program Assigned Title of Technology Manager or Some Such Title

Manager recently assigned job title of Technology Manager, or some such title, and the person has no idea how to program. This is "odd". Act like they know all about it, but they do NOT.

@1drm, I agree. And there are the ones that think every software developer is the same. I was so glad when this so-called Teller Technology Manager retired. She was a glorified PM. She had no clue to technology at all, but she was organized. LOL!

@wbb, so agree. Tellers that are Senior Engineering Managers! I kid you not!

I do not think that a Technology Manager, who is not technical at all, is qualified in any way to write a performance review on an employee with a main job function of program development. Non technical Technology Manager thinks the developer is taking too long to write extremely complex programs, for example, when non technical Manager has absolutely no idea what is involved in that complex program development. Not fair at all.

Determinant or detriment?

This has been the case for some time in tech. Most managers wouldn’t know how to do the job if their life depended on it. Not unique to WF. This new breed of upper mgmt thinks that they just have to manage people and not necessarily know what they manage, much to the determinant of American business as a whole.

Welcome to WFB.......a Technology organization filled with fast talkers and repeaters of Engineer speak they take from their subordinates I tell you......I live this everyday, and see it in multiple WFB tech teams, the leaders are charismatic no nothings, that have the red carpet rolled out for them. This is why tech is failing....we don't have tech leaders who have experience in the verticals they oversee.

They don't have to know everything their team does. They are there to manage, not do the work for you. Sure, some tech knowledge is nice...but it's not required.

A manager who can't code? He-l, I'm more worried about my coworkers with developer titles who can't code.

Such a cynical comment - they also have to take responsibility when things go pear shaped which happens way more often than when things go right. You really want a job where you're accountable for somebody else's output? I've had some very talented engineering managers and some really lousy corporate shills - it's all swings and roundabouts at the end of the day.

Engineering Managers don't have to be technical to take credit for the teams accomplishments and make it sound like their own leadership.

Wells Fargo managers are highly technical. I use powerpoint all the time but my BlackBerry stopped working this morning.

I take it you're not in Technology? I've been an engineer with WF for over 20 years and I have never had a manager that was particularly technical. Mentoring comes from the senior-level engineers.

We have Software Engineering Managers and Senior Software Engineering Managers who, unsurprisingly, manage engineers. I've not heard the title Technical Manager but it sounds like a non engineering position to me. Maybe a project manager for technical projects or something.

Technology managers manage technology resources (people), they don’t necessarily have to be technical themselves.

Why do the responses read like agile use cases. Someone from India stirring the pot?

I've worked for plenty of "Technology Managers" who didn't program. There's a lot more jobs in technology than coding.

@OP would know that if they worked in technology.

The persons assigned the job title of Technology Manager, or some similar job title, need to be required to take a technical skills assessment survey. If they do not have the technical skills required for the employees who work for them they should not be left in charge of those technical employees.

Not odd at all. Just happened in my team. The person knows nothing, no experience and somehow scored highest in interview. I’m really convinced the interview process needs some serious review because it is imposing some real risk. It seems experience is a small part of the equation if you are a smooth talker.

A person assigned the job title of Technology Manager, or some similar job title, should be VERY highly advanced in their technical skills and be able to mentor the employees who report to them in those highly advanced technical skills.
