Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

How to create career plan?

Experienced hire here, I've been asked by my boss to create a career plan for myself. I've only been here a few years and have a very narrow view of the company.

Unfortunately since there are no job listings or even examples to look at I have no idea what the options are. Never worked anywhere that kept job openings and options secret.

I figured the way it worked around here is that someone would just tell me where to go next when they were ready.

Any good career plan won’t include ExxonMobil, but that’s probably not what your supervisor wants to hear.

As an experienced hire, you have the advantage of having experienced more than the indoctrination by the North Korean regime. That’s a great advantage — you should be able to find something else easily.

For those with 10+ years at XOM straight out of college, I am not as hopeful. Go and build your career elsewhere would be my advice.

If you were hired as a experienced hire, there is no career plan. You will be doing the same job until you retire, get fired or die. Your sup should know that.

Anything other than that is just BS fluff he is wanting to pad his own PDA.

Don’t ask me how I know.

It sounds like they are getting ready to drop you and are looking for reasons to do so. Regardless of what you create for them, they’ll say that it doesn’t match with their long term needs, or doesn’t match their view of your potential, or some other lie.

Pull back from work as much as you can to avoid getting fired. Do the bare minimum and find a new job. Do this and you’ll be fully prepared for meeting in 7 months when they tell you you’re NSI and PIP’d.

Good luck and GET OUT!!!

There are no career plans. The company owns your career and puts you where they need a body.

Career plan is a lie.
Don’t waste your time here.
Stay a few years to pack your resume and get out!
Money is good if that is what you are looking for.

I've never seen my 5 year career plan. I joined early 90s. You do the math.

I scheduled a meeting with the development group in HR, and had a pretty good chat with the rep. About 30 minutes after I got back, I got called into my super's office, and she had printed off an email from the HR rep detailing everything that was said and discussed. Good times. Luckily I didn't say anything negative, but I did express desire to change jobs. However, miraculously I had performance issues during that meeting with my Super. I trusted nobody after that.

Every time I set a career path they outsource / MSP the area, similar to engineering is let’s focus on local technical skill set development but at same time remove most of those opportunities to advance… why aren’t our people growing technically they ponder? eyeroll

Trying to engineer or be technical and planning a career path is difficult.

To anyone if you want to be a coordinator/facilitator and plan a career path around that plenty of opportunity.

If you are doing well in your current group/location, than your Career Plan should be progression in the same area.

If you aren’t doing as well as you think you should…or believe people have made pre-determined negative judgements, than get out of dodge. Ask for a role in a new region, a new group, a different affiliate etc. Sometimes you need to get away from the management in your microcosm to succeed.

This is especially true for experienced hires. I’ve seen some early cultural missteps limit experienced hires. They change groups after a couple years, and people forget they worked somewhere else. And now they understand the cultural well enough to blend in.

Ask the 'Boss' for copy of his written 'career plan' when he was a few years in.
He doesn't have one prepared, even today.

The slimy things the managers cook up to keep you running.
In circles like a headless chicken.

Hahaha. Career plan 😂

The only thing you’ll get at Exxon is “trust the system”, someone will manage your career, just be open to “opportunities” and they will come to you.

Also, take initiative, but not too much Initiative. Ask for what you want, but don’t be pushy, people don’t like you want to go places. Basically do your job and the rest will take care of itself.

There - I summarized for you every single forum, fire chat, sharing session with every a-ho-e executive telling new hires to take ownership of their careers by relaxing and putting your head em down.

It worked for them, it will work for you - wink, wink 😉

Career plan - 🤣 lol
Thanks for the good laugh.
