Unused time off

Was anybody else unable to use their time off in 2021 due to deadlines, lack of resources and no backup? With the "use it or lose it" policy, TR wins by making people work when they are supposed to be off and not paying for the PTO.

Use it early in the year. People wait and for what?

I use all my time. I used to not use it but well that’s like leaving money on the table. Why would I leave thousands of dollars when I am owed them.

Use your vacation time because you earned it. And you can’t take it with you.

My managers have never turned mine down and I am thankful for it. But that should be the norm and not the exception.

I have on occasion taken multiple weeks off over my time here without issue.

It’s your managers job to manage the work. Not to stop you from taking time off.

I assume all teams work differently but in mine, we are expected to do all of our work the days before or the days after we take a day off. There is no backup. With layoffs and positions not being filled, extra work has been piled on for the last few years. It's not as simple as just: request a day off and the manager approves it. I have had time left at the end of the year that I "lost."

If I’m not important enough to given beyond an Achieved with a sad 2-3% raise which doesn’t even account for inflation when I’m doing Exceeds or above work, I’m not important enough to be missed for a day off here, there, or half the month of December.

The company can’t have it both ways to where you’re crucial to their success but they refuse to compensate you (in pay or time off) as such.

I also recommend that if you’re sometimes stuck with unused vacation days just take a bunch of half days off.

I always use all my time off. But this was left with bunch of time bc unexpected Nov layoffs leaving me with no back up. Your manager owes it to to you to unofficially carryover if he/she denied you vacation requests. Considering how much unpaid overtime I put in, the company still owes me.

If you didn't use it, and you REALLY have two or more submissions that were rejected... then you should give your manager one more shot to make it right, then make an example of them.
It is a part of your compensation package, and it is OWED to you.

Now... if you didn't officially request because of some preconceived notion you would be rejected, then that's on you. Other people take their time. You should, too.

Always been able to use mine. I take Mondays or Fridays off if I don't plan on going on any trips.

Also, use up the float days first because those don't ever get paid out in the event of a layoff.

I have never had unused time off. Time off is part of our compensation, so use it as such. Even if I have to take off every Friday for a month or take a series of half days just to get some rest or make personal plans, I plan out my days off and then take them. I don't save them until Christmas and then find out I can't take off two weeks in a row.
And no, I am not an "HR lady."
