Thread regarding Cisco Systems Inc. layoffs

I lasted a little over six months

In the end, I didn't even care how it would look on my resume, I was determined to leave ASAP due to too many career red flags that started popping up from the very start. From negative work culture that includes a total lack of respect for employees to a lack of innovation and fun in the workplace to managers acting unprofessionally and on and on. More power to those who are willing to take this, but that's not me.

Their only job is to keep cisco from getting sued. If you're not going to file a lawsuit against "screamer", the HR is not going to bother.

And they'll probably flag you for an LR just as insurance in case you decide to change your mind and file that lawsuit.

My only involvement with HR is as a portal to benefits and/or payroll questions or changes.

I was having issues with a Director I rolled up to when my manager quit before they could hire a replacement manager. He kept changing his priorities/directives for me, so in a staff meeting, I said "I have no idea what you expect from be because it changes daily." Next thing I know, he'd called HR and had a meeting setup between him & I w/ HR as an intermediary to "discuss" communication tips FOR ME and I was LR'd three months later. Why did I need to know how to send him emails so that he would read them instead of filtering them to a folder when I needed HIM to communicate effectively with me? And stick to his decision for more than 24 hrs.

So many better opportunities out there. So many companies to choose from desperate for work. I am so glad I didn't put my rosy unicorn glasses on and take a job there out of desperation. While trying to make the decision they called and said the position was being converted to a contractor position. Out of spite, I should have taken it, received the 6-weeks worth of pay before the other job I did take started.

All of these management psychoses are due to a lack of growth caused by senior leadership that simply doesn't know what they're doing.

In that environment, the layer under the senior leadership pretends to play along in order to stay in favor so their teams flounder with no direction, and it all flows down from there.

If you're simply looking for a paycheck for the next 2-3 years, you can probably keep your head down low enough to squeak by. If you're looking to build a growing career, get out now.

In this day and age of craziness, it is definitely unwise to scream or bully at anyone; either at work or outside of work. Sooner or later karma will catch up with them. Always be professional.

Its definitely not just you. I don't have any managers that scream, but I do have managers that backstab unrepentently even when it will drastically harm a project or the company.

They take people off important projects that are halfway done (so the team basically has to restart) or overload an employee they dislike with so many projects they are dying, or say a bunch of messed up stuff behind an employee's back that hurts thier ability to work with stakeholders. They also steal employees' work and label it thier own regularly.

They do that kind of thing any time they feel like having a power trip or don't like something you said or did. Or sometimes just to get a leg up. Its a gross culture.

It seems to go all the way up the chain to the ELT.

You don't get promoted if you can't swim with the sharks. (Like if you care about the customers or your fellow employees - that is a pretty much instant removal from any promotion plans).

We had a team that had lots of really great 10 year veterans on it, and had a new comer that was better at kissing bu-t than them take the manager role that came up. She didn't know much of anything about the job, but she was good at telling the boss that her sh-t didn't stink... so she got the role.

Thats just life at Cisco. You learn to not give a sh-t about much real quick or you move on to a different company you can care about.

You made a good Choice. Regardless of what Glassdoor is paid to say Cisco is not the place it was 5-6 years ago. I am sure there are still pockets of goodness but those are becoming more the anomaly.

So it's not just me? My manager is a drama queen. He has screamed at me a least 4 times in the last year. He just calls me, with no notice and started screaming. WTF?

If not, do these managers realize some may not respond well to being screamed at? Maybe someone will respond in kind or worse if the manager has the stones to do that in person.

Guys, most of us agree here Cisco was great company, once upon a time, and many of us are grateful for those times and experiences, but that time is long gone. I loved my first 6 or 7 years at Cisco and gradually started to become disillusioned so I left, simple and so far the grass is greener. However, that is not to say my new company does not have issues with management, attrition and politics etc. Many of us will realise every company has its downsides and positives. What you have to realise, is that if you are unhappy and in a toxic environment, each day you stay, you are harming yourself and lessening your chances to develop new skills and be more somewhere else where you can do amazing things and feel fulfilled and happy and probably better off finance . Life is too short, get over the Cisco it was once upon a time and do yourself a favour and do what is needed. We all have a choice. Never forget that. Best of luck to all in their next chapter if you have taken that decision.

Don’t sweat it. I worked at Cisco 10+ years and now work for a competitor. Part of my job is interviewing people. Cisco doesn’t hold the weight it used to. If you aren’t happy, get out before it damages your career aspirations and find a company where you can broaden your skillset, and be content to happy, without the ever looming threat/rumor/chatter of layoffs uprooting the life you built. Not worth it.
