No more extra work for free

They simply won't stop overloading me. I have more work to do every week. So far, I have done extra work for free, but I do not intend to further endanger my health and do extra work for free anymore. Admittedly, I would have preferred to have taken a slightly firmer stance from the beginning. I just wonder how my superiors will react now when I slow down, that is, stop doing all that extra work? Probably because of that I will be the target for the next round of layoffs?

Can relate. The culture was bizarre. ..strange culture of managing up. The more you do...lots of hours...trying to hit the goals and dates...does not seem to matter at the end of the day. Of course, it matters in a way because you are employed and providing for your family. In terms of progression, innovation...leading towards needed change....thinking ahead of the competition...filling gaps in the org....trying to meaningfully coach employees...be open about how you can improve, etc...so many things...it was meaningless at TR. All these things are appreciated at other companies. I respect anyone that feels TR is for them. And their families. Good for you. For so many, it just is not anymore. A lot of people have smartly polished their skills, networked, moved on. By all accounts, happier in many ways. No more worries about downsizing. We have all seen the toll this can take on individuals and parents trying to take care of their families. This is why I write this long message. If you feel the stress of TR (or emptiness of the professional path), then the grass is really greener on the other side in this economy.

I was stuck doing the work of 3 additional people. Trust me when I say that, the more you produce, the happier they are loading up on you. The ELT making these decisions get paid 100x more than you have added to their staff, reducing their own workloads. Do the work of one reasonably efficient, diligent person. You don't owe them the work of 3 reasonably efficient, diligent persons. Take advantage of the current employment market and make a change. I'm really happy that I did.

If you can’t get it done by 5, do it the next day. It’s just that simple.

If management needs it by a EOD tell them you have other items that are due and this new task will not be finished by then.

If they insist, ask them what other task would they like you to stop doing so you can now get to this new task.

Get it in email to CYA.

I have never seen anybody besides a Sales Rep get fired here outside of a layoff. You are fine. Stop sweating and start laying flat
