Thread regarding Cisco Systems Inc. layoffs

It's all about the relationships, right?

Massive hours are not the norm if you are assigned to "pet projects" of a Director. It's all about relationships at Cisco. Individual contributors without strategic relationships will be worked long hours and eventually discarded.

Absolutely! It's not even a secret anymore. However, I no longer intend to work long hours.

It's not what you know, it's who you know. And, if you're in sales, a little good luck is required too. Plain and simple.

Every job, in every company, is about relationships. What’s the problem?

There were times I worked long hours close to critical software releass because I liked my work and I was determined to prove to my new manager. I got rewarded by two promotions in 6 years.
Then a change took place at upper level and screwed up all the reviews and a certain group was rewarded and my group was not looked favorably.
Many in our group did not get any pay raise for 4-5 years. Many left and got rewarded 20-25% pay raise outside cisco.
Take care of your health and balance work-life. Life is short, explore things outside work.

For the life of me I've never understood this complaint.

I never worked long hours at Cisco. I never worked long hours at any job prior to Cisco and I never work long hours at my current job. The reason for this is because I'm not some virtue signaling mark willing to bend over at a moment's notice for a company that will be all too eager to take advantage of me. I draw a line in the sand from day one because I have some self respect and backbone unlike the bootlickers.

What happens if I don't work long hours, will I get fired or something? Who cares. I'll just find another useless job at another toxic company. Those places are a penny a dozen here in the valley.

Enjoy checking your emails and IMs all weekend while I'm relaxing.
