Thread regarding Cisco Systems Inc. layoffs

Chuck Has Collected A Paycheck For Seven Years

Cisco has simply atrophied over the last seven years. When the board replaced one salesman with another salesman in 2015, it was clear that his only job at Cisco was to slow the rate of decline for as long as possible.

Other technology leaders from the 90s/00s retooled for the changing market (e.g. Nadella at Microsoft) and have recreated their past successes. Cisco's focus has been on ignoring their customers' changing needs and on continuing to sell the the technology they brought to market in the 90s/00s.

@uncleben agreed on Microsoft but IBM has become their own mess. Remember when they tanked their own email system for weeks and employees resorted to Gmail to keep in contact with clients since whoops, it took out the VoIP phone systems too. Take a trip over to their Layoff board with some popcorn in tow.

As an employee, Cisco has two serious problems it needs to solve.

  1. Cisco needs to design their own chips and fab them at TSMC
  2. Wipe out the(overkill) bureaucracy in their systems.

I remember when Chucky was promoted to SVP, Worldwide Field Operations. The email announcement said that any sales rep trying to hedge their forecast numbers would easily be discovered by Chucky because he is a mathematician. That day changed my life.

Who cares? Does anyone remember, which captain is at the helm of the Titanic? In history, nobody will remember.

But, John they will remember.

Yep, seen this Jobs interview many times and this is what's happened at Cisco.
Leaders at Cisco think they are like Jobs, unfortunately. JC was a muppet who got lucky when the Internet exploded. It exploded in the first place because of people like Jobs and Gates, not him.

Amen. A decade ago both Microsoft and IBM were in the same boat as Cisco, carrying an image of legacy technology vendors in a world spinning around them much too fast. Today, Microsoft's Azure is poised to give AWS a run for its money. IBM turned into a proper software and services company following a strategy of targeted acquisitions. Cisco's problem is that its strategy consists only in making the numbers for the quarter. Nothing less, nothing more. Chambers was a salesman and Robbins was cast from the same mold. Both hopelessly clueless about industry trends. This wouldn't actually be a problem if Cisco had a strong CTO driving a vision across the board, but that is unfortunately not the case. To make things worse, Cisco managed to hire two incredibly inept CTOs [Padma Warrior and Biri Singh (bet you had forgotten about him!)] and wasted years and years watching the innovation train passing by. Bring back Judy Estrin and Charlie Giancarlo! Make Cisco great again!

JC becoming CEO was the end of the company.
