Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

Start looking even if you're not planning to leave

I know of too many former coworkers who were laid off and had no idea what to do since they've been here and out of the hiring game for so long. Look at the jobs, apply, and go to interviews. The worst that can happen is you see what's out there. The best option? You get an offer you can't refuse and you move on even without trying. If you do it, you'll make sure your resume is always current and you'll sharpen your interviewing skills. You've got nothing to lose.

It is mentioned in this thread that EM will go from around 70,000 to 45,000.

With the new hires coming in at a high rate, and buildup of BTC, that means a lot more than 25,000 current employees will become former employees by 2025.

Agree, @2slp... And there's something unmentioned here, it does depend upon your location. If there was 75000, and will be 45000 in the future, that doesn't mean 40% will be kicked out at your location. If you're in the US or high-cost locations, it will be even more.

Those in low-cost places will be less and less impacted over the years.

@1wcs - there is more than just PIP to get that type of head count reduction:

  1. asset sales / shutdowns (can't sell a refinery? Make it a terminal)
  2. conversion to contractor (EM employee on Monday, 3P employee on Tuesday doing the same job at the same desk)
  3. automation (who needs a person when we can use a program? Our customers are "perfectly happy" to place orders online)
  4. reduced hiring (just don't fill positions when someone leaves)

If that's the target, it can be had. I'd keep an eye on #2 - we already did that with customer service - other support functions are ripe for this same treatment.

Good advice.
One caveat: don't apply at another Commodity company.
You are probably better than that.

Just I forgot to clarify something about the first rule. It is implied that your co-workers and something called self- friends at your job will not need to know about it. Period

The overall strategy seems to be to eliminate access to pensions without removing the pensions in order to unlock the money tied up to satisfy pension funding requirements.

I’ve learned someone being PIPed does not necessarily mean they are a poor performer. There’s a whole list of items from management ignorance to a failure of marketing themselves.

What is our headcount at the beginning of 2022?

Is it really 45,000?

If it is truly that number, fasten your seatbelts!

I'm scared. We need a stealth method of applying / interviewing.

Our final headcount is expected to drop from 75,000 employees in 2020 to 45,000 employees by 2025. It is hard to believe that 40% of the current employees is "PIP" worthy. If so, it makes you wonder about the managers and H/R staff that hired the 40%.

The reality is that we have already gotten rid of the low performers in 2017. Any PIP after 2017 is an intentional staff reduction "layoff".

A lot of people used to think that working at EM is a job for life, hence people are getting really comfortable and not polishing their interview skills...I bet even some managers at EM who only have been at EM probably also really bad at being interviewed...so it does not hurt to work on that skills while you are still employed....

You should update your resume 1-2 times a year and consider interviewing with another company once a year too. Just be smart about it.. don’t broadcast it to others..

First rule, and the only one, when you are looking for a job: Do not tell anybody, this include your family, wife , friends even your pets. All of them can use it against you or leak the information. Period

Having spent 35 years in O&G as an engineer (upstream), you should NEVER stop looking for the next job.

You being PIP'd has nothing to do whatsoever with what you do, either at work or outside work.
