Thread regarding Nike Inc. layoffs

Counteroffer

I recently got offered a position outside of (tech-related) Nike, so far their pay and benefits are outstanding and actually gave me more than I'm asked for. They're giving me a 53k salary increase from what my current position is at Nike as an ETW!! I know i've been getting severely underpaid compared to my co-workers, but I put up with it for a long time in the hopes of being "converted."

The new job offer is providing me with 4 weeks vacation, 401k, profit sharing and good health insurance. 100% remote also ( which is what I want)

I told my current boss about the new offer and asked for a counteroffer. What can I really expect from Nike as an FTE? My other concern is upward mobility in the company if I continued with Nike. It seems damn near impossible to get an internal position even on another team when I applied as an ETW. So far, Nike has left me with a sour taste in my mouth. I really like my team, but I feel like Nike isn't worth the drama anymore. Especially all the internal politics.

Is being an FTE all that it's cracked up to be? To me, I've already made up my mind.

With the perpetual reorg never locked down (at least in ITech-E), any counteroffer is likely to be moot, changed, or a disgraceful lie . Besides, as an ETW you're going to be hitting a dead end in May anyways. Get out now and save yourself. That's the hammer no one is talking about openly enough. LT here aren't telling any of our ETWs the truth about what's coming then, and it's a godda-n travesty. Then they dangle FTE openings in Atlanta, Poland, and India if you're willing to uproot and move your family in support of RL's DWO initiative <-- another joke. I know ETWs that have been stuck in limbo trying for an FTE for years, just trying to get some job security much less "right-sized" treatment and pay. Kudos to you on your offer - take it, and secure yourself.

If you were an FTE, and you did ask for a counter offer, you might see a pay bump or some other "perk" offered to stay ( I once was offered a Home Depot gift card by a manager), but if the offer has anything to do with positional change or growth you're guaranteed to be disappointed. Management track? Forget it unless you're "in the pal click". E-band? forget that too; reserved for either pet friends or managers that couldn't cut in the M-track but HR wouldn't allow to be fired. At best a counter offer just becomes an entertaining gesture to see who scrambles, and who doesn't - a ruse to either satisfy your decision to leave or prove just how disappointing Nike really is.

I ended up just submitting my resignation. Nike didn't make a counteroffer and instead decided to hire foreign workers. lol.. I feel silly for even requesting one. It just goes to show you how cheap Nike really is... I feel relieved, Nike treats employees like a child... Adios cheap ba----ds.

@OP You are a number to Nike and nothing more. Total compensation? Time to actually take your PTO? Make it ten years and get a sabbatical? Ha! They could care less about the individual than they the care about their bottom line.

Why am I posting this? For people on the inside that think Nike will magically make a counter-offer to you, they won't, in fact, that's the greatest insult. Numerous posts about people who had been at the company 5,10,15, 20 plus years get shuffled into new roles, either accept them or leave. Since JD and his cronies are now enacting their 5 year plan of cutting most of the tribal knowledge from the company, Nike will be reborn in a new image. The question you have to answer (and answer rapidly) is are the skills that you're growing are they for you and your career or do they only serve Nike? If they only serve Nike, it's time to move on.

TL;DR - Most tech jobs outside of Nike pay 30-50% more than Nike ever will because they only care about their S-Band brotherhood and above. If your skills are not growing you personally, it's time to move on and do what's best for you and your career. Good luck.

OP: It's not personal, it's business. Be a mercenary about it, and do so with a clean conscience. Two things to keep in mind:

  1. Unless you're a C-level with a big, fat golden parachute, Nike will think nothing of laying you off if it suited their purposes.
  1. Let's say you accept the counter-offer. 12 months from now, you'll still be miserable, and your Director and S+ will start considering you a layoff target. Why? Because you just got more expensive to keep, and you might (even if by example) become an encouragement for your colleagues to go fishing for job offers from which they can glean their own counter-offers.

@3iqv: Nike doesn’t give 5 week paid sabbaticals. Nike gives you 100 hours of sabbatical PTO, to which you can add an additional 100 hours of your own PTO if you’d like. The idea that Nike gives you a full 5 weeks of additional sabbatical PTO is a common misconception.

I received a counter offer but it wasn’t enough when looking at total compensation between the new job and staying at Nike with the raise offered. Signing Bonus and Equity at the new company for the win.

Re-read your Nike offer carefully, I can tell you 100%, as a brand new FTE at Nike you will NOT be getting 4 weeks of PTO (vacation). PTO is based on a years of service accrual per each 2 weeks. It will take a few years to get to 4w/160h of PTO and 10 years to begin receiving 5 week paid sabbaticals. CONGRATS on coming aboard.

First hand knowledge of two instances being with myself and another colleague. Nike does counteroffer in the right situation. But common wisdom about not accepting counters is usually the best course of action. The reasons you started looking probably aren't going to be solved by a little pay bump, a black badge and a better title.

ETWs are treated like complete sh-t here. If they offer you and FTE role to keep you, you have to ask yourself why they couldn't do it sooner and only waited until your new offer.

Either way, CONGRATS! Very happy for you.

Never accept a counter offer, especially if you were that underpaid. My experience is that most of the promises in counter offers arent kept regardless of the employer.

Nike doesn’t counter. They’re happy to let good people walk out the door, only to be replaced by someone with much less experience. In today’s job market replacing employees is also more costly. They will likely end up paying your lower-skilled replacement more than they paid you. Doesn’t make sense but that’s how Nike roles. It’s also why the people we’ve hired in the last couple years have in my experience mostly been well paid but unimpressive.

Unlikely they’ll counter (Nike seems OK replacing with lesser caliber talent lol) - take it and celebrate getting out of that h e l l

That’s a huge increase and I have rarely ever seen Nike counter in general. Sounds like new offer is the way to go.

@OP, if your mind is already made up then others’ opinions are irrelevant. Go be happier elsewhere. Best of luck to you.
