Verizon Severance Package

Anyone here take the separation package in 2018/19 and been hired back as a full time employee? I came back as a contractor and was offered a full time position. Well, legal denied it but I know for a fact at least 1 other person has successfully been rehired.

Maybe the people that took the package felt they had no other choice. It was take the extra money or be laid off next round with no severance. Don't judge others. And stop saying they got all these large amounts of money! Yes those that where there for many years probably got a decent amount. If you want to be mad about someone taking severance, take it out on the execs that got the golden parachutes..millions of dollars in severance, not us common folk!

The reasoning for the cannot reapply was that a) it was voluntary (except for the outsourced folks), and b) they paid out an enhanced severance, which for many, was over a year. Normal severance packages do not have a cannot reapply clause. They don't want you back because they paid you handsomely to leave. If you were that important at the time, they denied your application for VSP. There were a couple of thousand of those folks.

The reasoning for the "cannot reapply" clause is because yrs ago employees who signed severance packages would reapply for a job and then file a lawsuit for discrimination when not hired back. The whole idea of a severance was to avoid lawsuits, so hence the adoption of the no apply no hire clause. Think of it like this, 2 people get divorced and sign an agreement saying they will never remarry.. yrs later they change their minds and want to get back together, are they bound by the agreement and are not able to remarry? Absolutely not. No matter what they agreed to yrs ago. Severance is a mutual agreement to part ways.. if both parties mutually agree to reunite, they can. There is no law against it. Long story short, Verizon added the clause to protect themselves from a lawsuit from people who reapply, but if they want you back there's nothing stopping them.

If Verizon wants someone back bad enough or if someone in mgmt will stand up to legal or hr , then anything is possible.
but, most will not take the risk or put their neck on the line so that you can be re hired - seen that happen often.
Especially, after the large lump sum you received from the 2018 Vsp.

Sales had quite a few people submit for the vsp but most were denied.

To OP- Yes. I was hired back after taking vsp not esp. I feel like the responses saying it's not possible is from HR or higher ups that want to keep it hush hush and not rock the boat. It shouldn't matter if someone was a good employee and vp level recognizes it and allows them to come back it's not like they have to allow every person that ever signed a vsp to come back.

The dept that wants the person back probably has more say or can get stuff to slide through. Like Sales, if the person made verizon a bunch of money verses a call center rep I would imagine they would do what they could to have the sales guy back

You actually can be hired back if you took the 2018/19 VSP (not IT) there's a loophole to the contract, "you cannot apply" vs "being asked to apply".. login on About you and look up some other VZ legal docs.. the VSP is not the be all end all.. IF THERE IS A PROVEN BUSINESS NEED OUTSIDE STANDARD BUSINESS PRACTICE pretty much anything can happen.

Love how people down vote the statements that are true. The 2018/19 VSP (which is what the OP is referring to) does not allow for anyone to be rehired except thru acquisition. If you were part of the ESP done at the same time (those were the IT employees outsourced to Infosys who declined) and you chose standard severance over enhanced, you were rehireable. Otherwise, it will never get past legal no matter how bad your higher ups may want you, as what happened to OP. You may do contracting work for 30 months at a time with a year in between each interval. Go ahead and down vote some more, but that's the truth. Don't believe it? Go apply.
If your "I know for a fact" person didn't come in through Blue Jeans, Media swaps, Tracfone or any of the smaller acquisitions since 2018, then your fact is fiction.

There are clearly different VSPs that I'm assuming have different wording. Mine was from 2018 and it does not say anything about SVP approval

Nowhere in that document does it say anything about SVP approval. It says the only way back in through acquisition. You obviously don't have a copy yourself.

Paid handsomely (lol) maybe for some. I was ASKED to come back and if were not by my manager and team, I wouldn't have! And as far as the grass being greener, it's actually about the same. Again I came back more so for my team, I worked with these folks for almost 10 yrs they are like family. Money/benefits was never a deciding factor for me leaving or returning.

That was one of the conditions in taking the last VSP - cannot be hired back as an employee. There was some play in wording - cannot apply vs being asked to apply. If part of a company acquisition, you were allowed to roll over as an employee from the acquired company. Honestly - NONE of you should be hired back, you got paid handsomely to leave - so stay that way.
