Vishal Garg, the founder and CEO of the digital mortgage company Better.com, laid off more than 900 people over Zoom last week. He accused "at least 250" terminated staff members of stealing from the company by working just two hours a day, Fortune first reported.

Loads of people at cic. Quiet rooms, conference rooms, empty cubes, parking garages, I have seen it many times. And it’s not just the peons.

No chance whatsoever that RTO will be delayed by “the Omnicron variant”.
However there is a very slight chance that there could be delays due to the Omicron variant.
oh, and don't forget the primary driver for RTO, 'all that collaborating around the watercooler!'

I know lots more people that waste nearly the entire day in office. Never at their desk, always in vague meetings/break rooms/at others desks/or even sleeping in empty cubes or rooms. I’ve even had one person tell me about the random hookups he has on site.
There are plenty of tools to measure productivity while remote. If managers aren’t using those, that fault lies with them.
Now when employees return they will be doing these daily activities:
- getting coffee -30-40 mins
- disinfecting every accessory in their shared cubicle - 60-120 mins
- Roaming around and talking to coworkers to catch up - 60-120 mins
- Sleeping in cubes, rooms, or having trysts - 60-120 mins.
- Add in lunch time over runs, meeting over runs, bathroom breaks, smoke breaks [some go every hour] and that’s a solid 60-180 mins
There goes the entire day. There goes productivity. There goes morale of the hard workers actually trying to do their job because everyone else on their team doesn’t want to be back at the office.
Before Covid, my office based colleagues would show up late, take 39 minutes to get settled, gather friends to go on a coffee run, come back, read emails then go do an hours worth of work. Voila! It’s time for lunch. Rinse. Repeat. Wasting time has nothing to do with where you sit but how vested you feel in the company.
Any chance RTO will be delayed by Omnicron variant? Just want a straight up answer
Some people absolutely are doing this. Many of us can be working in a non-trackable method however. If your job is to solve certain kinds of issues, 'thinking' about them is very legit work after all. Not everything is a mouse click, a key press, or a phone call.
In any case, I'm not sure why we are wasting our time talking about this anymore. It's happening, regardless of the situation.
