Survivor’s guilt

After many, many years of drawing the ‘short stick’ in ranking, I’ve seemed to hit a stride where I am appreciated. (Ironically, I deliver the same caliber work as I always have.)

Now I have some variation of survivor’s guilt. I am so disgusted by how my peers are treated, that I feel guilty for accidentally ending up okay. It’s not fair. My ranking early in my career was not fair. My current ranking is not fair. I suspect your ranking is not fair, either.

Whether you stay or whether you go, we all need to remember that this is all wrong, right now. I would like to think I am important to the company. I get positive feedback and my ego says “Yes, I worked hard for this, and they finally see my value.” But I have this awful feeling that I am receiving a bribe to smile and plod on. Clearly, I am still processing this. (This is probably why I am reading a layoff site.). But for those who are unhappy, I feel you. Your reasons are valid.

@1yxj+1ed0x1bM - Exactly! NSI should not be a forced percentage! It should be reserved for the true slackers and deadwood. Some really good people were put in NSI and it was in no way deserved and did not accurately reflect their performance.

This is the problem - some supervisors although they didn't agree with the system, they still have to divide their people into different group (according to %) ...
If many team members are performing in the team, why it is not possible to have many people in the Excellent category...
The people in the NSI should be people who refuse to do their job or have some disciplinary issues...

One of the many problems with our ranking process is how subjective it is. One supervisor may think you’re great while another just doesn’t like you for some reason. Different supervisors and managers value different attributes.
I had a few employees that were ranked fairly low when they came to my team and I just couldn’t figure out why! I thought they did great work and when I would inquire with the previous supervisor, I’d get the same old spiel about its all relative to the rest of the rank group but not one solid reason or fact to support the ranking. I then came to realize that what I valued in a person and their work was much different than a lot of others. I valued actual technical skills and hard work while others liked the ‘players’, those who knew how to brown nose and suck up.
Another tidbit that still angers me even though it happened 10 years ago is the manager 2 levels above me that didn’t respect my rank list and dropped somebody from middle third to lower third just because he thought the person spent too much time at the water cooler. He had no idea of the work this person did, what their skills were, or how much they contributed. Biggest as----e I ever worked with.

I know how you feel as I feel the same. After working from home for more than six months and doing very little, I was ranked Outstanding, received a 9% raise and RSUs while many of my friends were ranked at the bottom and basically told to quit. I feel guilty and don’t know what to do, hold past RSUs that I can sell or wait to see if the stock price goes up.

Yeah right. In the back of our minds, there's that nagging thought of "it's just a matter of time."

I hear you. I have no idea why I survived the PIP off. I’m grateful to have a job. However, I’m so sick and tired of being mistreated. Everything from supervisors lying to me about my role/ responsibilities, support, and career opportunities through the years. Last supervisor was the ultimate douchbag. Took credit for my work and had secret meetings on stuff I was working on to promote his own agenda. Then threw me under the bus to cover up his mistakes. Actually, I think he was threatened because I was doing a better job than he was. So I was moved to another role. The NI was based on some fabricated feedback that I didn’t network enough during the pandemic. What BS! This was last straw. I’m so done here.

Nobody’s ranking is fair, unless you’re a HiPo with a mighty sponsor. Then everything is flawless (see the now famous case of DW).

For some reason this post reminds me of those people that apologize for their ancestors. If you didn’t do anything wrong, you do not need to apologize.

I believe it’s the water. There is something in the water that makes you feel this way. It’s been proven. Stop drinking the water and you will feel better. It worked for me.
