Thread regarding Cisco Systems Inc. layoffs

Trying to get promoted here is hopeless?

At least in my case, all efforts to try to get promotion through hard work and engagement were in vain. The more I worked, the more work I got, but I wasn’t promoted. Now I don't even want to try anymore. Until I get out of here, I'll only work the bare minimum.

Manager did some serious carrot dangling on me the other day when he found out I applied for another role. Kicking the can down the road I probably have a freaking target on my back. Especially since all my team mates love to brag in team chat and mailers how vaccinated and boosted they are

My experience after 10 years in Cisco. It is almost impossible to get promoted in your current post. Each promotion I’ve had up to G12 has meant a change of role or team.

Promotion from G12 is a whole different ball game though. In technical streams the dice are heavily loaded towards who you know that is already at Director or above that is willing to vouch for you. Yes, you need the docket/experience but if you’ve p’ed off too many people, forget it.

Well, if you are remote that’s another problem.

@6exe+1ee0sBxs I do “tick the diversity box” but unfortunately that is perceived to be a disadvantage by many at the geo I am in. Hence, I am getting more and more convinced that the only way up is out.

Admittedly, I have received some nominal RSUs last couple of years and a raise this year.

Thats what they did over the last two years when they wanted to keep you, but didn’t have a slot to promote you. Its getting close to your turn. I was in the same boat and just got promoted.

Pulling 5 years at grade 11. Done everything I was told to do and more. Account work ( obviously), SEVT preso, Cisco Live, public speaking, contributed to patents…

The way they see it, that’s just situation normal and what they expect from every grade 11-12. Unless you tick some diversity box, you’re going to have to do more.

Pulling 5 years at grade 11. Done everything I was told to do and more. Account work ( obviously), SEVT preso, Cisco Live, public speaking, contributed to patents…- in other words everything that Matt said he did to be a DSA on that Tim Carnes call couple of weeks back related to SE/SA track. Still in Grade 11 after all this time. Need to be grade 12 before I can even dream of being a PSA/PE. There is no interest if sponsorship from my management- they just take it for granted.

Far better to go elsewhere or work for myself I think. Starting to interview and hoping to get out asap, hopefully in the new year . Fingers crossed

Took me 12 years to get promoted from
G12 to g13. Not the perfect place, but I intend to go with the flow and see what happens. I know that the moment you try and poke holes to improve things you are sidelined as a trouble maker. Learnt this the hard way!! Let’s see how long this lasts.

You get promoted only if you are a lower grade. If you are grade 11 and stuck there for 4 odd years despite very hard work all around ( like I am), then my advice is update your CV and start looking elsewhere for career growth. I certainly am.

"Why waste your time on checking people's typos?"

A typo is not the same thing as a spelling mistake. Spelling mistakes make my eyes bleed and my ears cry. I'm GrammarNazi, a man with a mission to raise this forum to a level of unprecedented excellence! You're welcome.

The harder i work here, the more i get punished. I can't even understand why. It's a sick company when you try harder and actually get punished for it.

"Considered you managed to spell it wrong..."

Strawman argument : When you have no argument so you resort to attacking the speaker instead.

Why waste your time on checking people's typos? Don't you have something better to do with your life? Folks are typing with their thumbs and you are wasting your day telling them so. rolls eyes

"Cisco promotes incompetance."

Considered you managed to spell it wrong, you seem to speak about incompetence from experience.

Cisco promotes incompetance.

If you know how to do your job and are good at it - you get stuck in the roll for 10 years doing everyone's work for them because you are only one of two people on a team of 14 that works.

If you suck at your job - your manager helps you promote or move to a different team because they don't want to deal with you anymore but don't want to wait 6 months for the next layoff to can you.

@1wic+1ee0sBxs I hear you. Not sure which European country you are in but this is a common topic in some of the CAAN calls. A poll showed over 90% of immigrants and minorities believe that they are being side tracked inside of Cisco EMEAR because of their ethnicity. In a few cases ( not mine) that is so obvious that it verges on the ridiculous. If you truly believe that you are being shelved because of your ethnicity then I’d seriously request you to consider either moving to a more immigrant friendly geo such as the US or move employer. At least in Cisco U.K. your fate is sealed if you are an immigrant unless you are a major political player.

Not sure if the ethnicity works. Maybe it does in the US. I belong to one of those ethnicities myself , in EMEAR, albeit gender wise male, working 12+ hrs a day for last few years without any hope of a promotion. Admittedly, I have received some nominal RSUs last couple of years and a raise this year.

Go into workday and update your g3nder and 3thnicity to reflect certain ones that will permit you to be promoted more easily.

Agree with all comments so far. I am pulling 12 odd hrs a week doing stuff I was never meant to for at least last 2+ years. But hey, look at options of becoming a Business Architect. Some of those nontechnical people in U.K. have changed their title to CTO, have absolutely no work to do up to the extent that one or two of them are running weekly social clubs on WebEx and expect people to show up . Complains if they don’t ! Clearly, us techies are in the wrong role.

Nothing good is going to come out of this do-tons-more-with-far-less culture. I lost people this past quarter and so far zero perspective of a backfill! My team is at the receiving end of the stick: extra work to take care of with no raises in sight. The ELT is truly running the company to the ground. Attrition is at an all-time high to a point we can't release bug fixes in due time.

I'm still disgusted that I didn't get a raise when I worked my bu-t off all year. Inflation is ki----g me.

and I'm also being pounded in every ho-e. I work 10 hour days on a normal week, much less a deadline week.

I need to just scale back and look for a job. But so exhausted.

This is what is happening to all of us. It’s id--tic, they are running it into the ground by refusing to backfill and correct exactly this culture that is breeding. The few sh-t bags that hide and collect pay all along every team and corner of the company are ruining it for the rest of us, because no one will stand up to them. I’m not even talking about grinding and putting extra work, people aren’t even trying during the work day but you can’t really fault them, we are burned out!!
