This wasn't a Cisco innovation. Check the IETF records.

The goal is to provide relief in FIB tables, but it's not the only way to skin that cat.

You do not know what you are talking about. SR is a major advance in the control plane of large scale networks, removing multiple other protocols and embedding traffic engineering natively.
