I am very anxious because I have seen this company lay off great people. That doesn't make any sense. If hard work is not the way to keep a job, what do I do to avoid being on the layoff list?

Its too late, IT has already identified you and they've added you to the list. The only sure-fire way not to get laid off is not work for Cenovus.
