U.S. Bank CEO issues apology after 5 INVESTIGATES ‘Banking While Black’ report

The head of U.S. Bank is now apologizing for what is being called a classic example of “Banking while Black” after a customer was accused of fraud and put in handcuffs while trying to cash his paycheck.

As 5 INVESTIGATES first reported this week, a U.S. Bank branch manager in Columbia Heights called police to report a “possible fraudulent check” and a suspect posing a threat.

Joe Morrow’s check was real, but police body camera video shows the manager didn’t call to verify that fact until after Morrow was in handcuffs.

“I am deeply sorry for where we have failed,” U.S. Bank’s Chief Executive Officer Andy Cecere wrote in a letter Friday. “What Mr. Morrow experienced is not the experience that any customer should have.”

The apology came days after 5 INVESTIGATES reported on the police body camera video that outraged racial justice advocates, civil rights attorneys and other people of color across the country who shared similar experiences.

To the idt who didn't read the article....love how you assume it was the Black guys fault even though the bank admitted to wrong doing. He did have a US Bank account and it was his paycheck. The bank manager also did try verifying the check until after the police got there. Try reading the article first next time, so you dont look like an idt.

Let me guess...didnt have a US Bank checking account.....and then add to that his cr-p attitude...which escalated the whole thing into something it is not.....he was put in handcuffs for a reason...that is the video we need to see...guarantee that would make this a whole different story

Andy has too much money to give a cr-p about some dipchit trying to cash a 30 dollar check

Columbia Heights? That's insane. I'd put money on the problem being that someone from a white suburb was sent to fill in and was so primed for criminal activity they didn't give this guy the benefit of the doubt. Yes, it is the Holidays and these kinds of crimes are more rampant these days than ever but Gimme A Break! You call the company before you assume the check is fraudulent. I never worked in a branch but would expect that to be protocol. Whatever happened to "Know Your Customer"?
A whole lot of good all that pandering to minority workers with the Business Resource Groups for every minority short of, "Purple People with Hangnails" has done to get people to stop making snap judgments about others for the color of their skin or their religion. I always thought having BRG's was going to create more rifts than inroads and this is just one example of the fallout. The Development Network should have added events geared toward inclusiveness rather than splitting off to separate groups. BRG's were always a pretense for marketing to employee contacts by culling cultural knowledge. What a nightmare!
