Depends. Single? Rent for a studio will set you back at least $3000. Car plus insurance, utilities, food -> another $1500. So count on at least $6000 per month or roughly $130K gross a year as a strict minimum.

The Bay Area is too expensive if you don't already own a house. Forget about raising a family in the Bay Area.

I left in 2000 at about $125K and I was not living high on the hog. So I would say 200-250 would be a range I might consider if I was starting out. But no amount with a family or if you want a yard and nice neighborhood.
