It’s not easy being a contractor either

Aside from the fact that being a contractor at Chevron is generally not the best thing that can happen to you, I think as a contractor I have never felt worse and more despised by direct hires than I do here. Why so much animosity towards contractors? You despise people who are not to blame for anything more than a company that makes decisions that may not work in your favor.

I think when you factor in vacation, sick days, 9/80, weekends, bonuses, benefits and whatnot the typical 10 year employee is probably paid at least $1500/day for actual work days.

I see contractors getting their own offices and being treated like staff. Some even get under the table 'benefits' if they kiss enough a * * and being 'diverse' enough to fill a quota, regardless of how incompetent they are at actually doing the job.

If you are not happy contracting at Chevron go give Exxon a try. My experience there was contractors were treated like something you inadvertently stepped in on the street.
I jumped ship and became staff at Chevron and from what I have seen contractors are treated almost like staff. OK it maybe just my business unit and department but contractors are treated as team members and get the same respect as others.
Yes they are paid more, don't get the same perks and don't have the same job security. but that is a choice you make when you go contracting or become staff.

The anger you feel directed towards you is not about you personally, it’s about money. Contractors routinely get paid more than employees for the same job because in a downturn, contractors are the first to go. But yet, at Chevron we are such a “be nice to everyone…we are all one team” place that on a daily basis we treat contractors the same as employees,. It’s easy for employees to forget that contractors have more job security risk, and it’s made worse by some contractors spending their entire career with Chevron and never leaving.

In my experience Contractors are treated well. Most contractors know their field of expertise well and are respected members of the team.

Because some of us are sick and tired of the company direction being determined by contracted consultants who don't know jack about what we actually do in this industry.

Because contractors are making way more than the regular employees and once the contractor is hired on they will be hired on at that salary or more. It’s frustrating and not fair.

The issue is always accountability. If the work or project goes wrong, blame the contractor. If the project is a success, the direct hire takes the credit. Being a contractor can be a steady job but you have no opportunity for advancement. Take your pick.

My first year out of college there was another guy who was also straight out of school, only he was a contractor. The secretary showed me his contract and it was for FIVE times my salary. We all despised him, haha. It didn't help that he was sort of an id--t. His contract only lasted a year and we convinced management he was not adding any value.
