A good friend of mine from Cisco recently got a new, much better paid job. His experience is that the skills and knowledge he gained at Cisco were not enough there. This is a person we considered one of the best in our team. // I am now wondering about the skills we are adopting here at Cisco, how relevant and useful are they for working in other companies in the industry?

Depends which industry. For woodworking, a Cisco career isn't going to help much. For all things IT, sure. Look at how many average folks are able to find a job outside. Anybody can land a job in sales. If it's a proper technical job you're looking at, Cisco gives you access to thousands of hours of training content and labs to play with.
We are good at talking on meetings and PPTs. Surely the new job, involved doing actual work.
