Thread regarding Chevron Corp. layoffs

What I have Learned At Chevron?

Well, today is my last day at Chevron and as I look back over the last 12 years, what I have I learned:

  1. If you are going to stab someone in the back, make sure you can blame it on someone else.
  2. Tell your manager that they are great no matter what. If they ask for honest feedback, just tell them they are the best manager you have ever had.
  3. It is always good to tell your manager that they are a roll model.
  4. Divert blame. Never allow someone to put the blame on you even if it is your fault.
  5. No one is your friend. Everyone is your competition.
  6. Say Chevron is the best place to work to everyone you see. If someone calls you out, simply say, but it is true. You may burn in he-l but you will be closer to that promotion.
  7. Be a mentor to as many people as possible but in no means allow them to get a foot in front of you.
  8. If you see some hipot coming up fast on your heels, you better find a way to cool their jets even it if takes planting a story that destroys their career.

My friends, that is the Chevron Way.

Kate is out.

Correct, @3kwa, not to mention a "layoff's" specific board where the traffic is not particularly suited for this type of discourse, unless you have absolutely no where else, don't fit into any of the other 1000's of message boards, or no internet navigation skills.

Get aggressive, loud, obnoxious and learn to love confrontation. If you do this you won’t feel the need to bottle things up and the vent your frustrations on a message board.

So it took you 12 years to derive your findings as an employee of Chevron and to find another company that would employ you. 12 years.....
Oh dear not the sharpest tool in the box are you.
Good luck wherever you go. Bye.

Friends at Exxon tell me they lock their office door every time they step out, partly to avoid co-worker sabotage, which has happened in the past.

hmmm, sounds pretty negative. Bottom line is we all have different experiences and views. For me from day #1 I never 'bled blue', but did use common sense courtesy, hard work, good manners but sense of humor, and had no problem helping others quite a bit, especially after carving a nitch SME skill. In my case, it seemed the right people really acknowledged someone who went out of box to help them, or someone in their group fix/help fix an issue. It worked out very well. Sure you beware of those you can tell are simply using you to leapfrog, but those usually stick out like sore thumbs. Work hard, help people, common sense ethics and you'll do well IMO. And yes, I was one who still hating all the PC stuff...Keep head up

But your list applies to every large company in the world. They are all essentially the same. The world is competetive - one big hunger game. Get used to it and get good at the game if you want to get ahead.

And don't think it will change at a smaller company or even retirement. You are always in competition with others for scarce resources and you need to deploy every strategy and dirty trick you can imagine because they will do the the same.

Next time you are in a Zoom call with some important people on it, watch the chat window to see what the masters are commenting. It is amazing.

Congrats! You will guaranteed be happier. This place since I started not too long ago is a bit of a circus that I’m still trying to figure out. Driving me to drink for the wrong reasons, worthless waste of my time in meetings with a decision by group mentality, nothing effective gets done, incompetent SMEs that I have to consult with, politics and nepotism seemingly obvious problems but no one empowered to do anything about it….the cycle goes on and on. Working my exit plan as well.all the best to you.

Yes, HR should be proud of the “Chevron environment” they’ve created.
