Thread regarding Cisco Systems Inc. layoffs

Competitors are paying big bucks

I got an offer and was quite surprised. Do you also think that competitors have come a long way when it comes to the conditions they give in order to attract and keep talents? Who would stay here when even the average Cisco employee can get much better terms with competitors? I'm afraid there won't be any talented people left here because of that.

It's a place with many similar ex-Cisco ex-TAC folks. I admit I got the job because of prior relationship. Going in both I and new boss not sure if it would work (am much older than most on team). Lots of contractors on team still, many by choice. I am going to go back to part-time soon myself. Service Provider, escalation stuff. Can still do the job but yes getting up there and 2am pages tougher the closer one gets to 60.

When looking for a new post-Cisco job, I purposefully asked to be hired as a contractor for a few months to make sure I truly synched with my new team. Luckily, finally, at a place with extremely limited showboating and grandious enlightened folks claiming to be leaders.

I won't say this is 100% BS, but in my 25 yrs of professional tech work, I've never seen a company post an FTE job and consider hiring a person as a contractor first. Hiring & onboarding staff is expensive, even if they're a contractor. No company wants to pay a recruiter's fees and then convert you when they were posting the job as an FTE role in the first place. Many companies do contractor hiring and later convert them, but I've never seen them do that with FTE roles. Those wages come out of different accounting buckets and it's too hard to get FTE roles approved to put it on hold for "a few months" while they see if they like you or you like them. They either post it as a contractor role w/ the intention of later conversion or they direct fill.

@1rxt+1ew5GzTN I know you are lying because for there to be a security competitor, Cisco would have to sell security.

The more one makes, the more they are just going to tax the cr@p out of you.

Is it really worth it?

I kissed b3hind and played the political game for decades.

Done with the games, dealing with toxic 1diots that I would never ever want to even talk to outside of work.

These places are out there if you choose wisely.

Keep far, far away from "technology leaders" who should have been politicians, but instead were parasitically brought into "management" by like minded "leaders".

They are knawing away at destroying a once great technology company. Do you really want to continue to live under their watch?

What's broken at Cisco is that current employees' salaries can't be adjusted to match today's market rates. A new grade 8 hire in 2022 will see an offer that's comparable to what a veteran grade 11 has been stuck at for years.

Yup, the only way to get a real raise at Cisco is to leave and come back. I've done that 3 times now. Work a few yrs as a contractor where the pay is stagnant, then convert w/ a slight raise, but way better benefits. Pay remains almost as stagnant as contractor pay until getting LR'd and receiving 6 mo pay as severance. Go somewhere for a year and come back as a vendor again and do it all over again.

The first time, I got stock options, but they were under water when I was LR'd so I didn't try to exercise the shares that had vested. Second time, didn't get stock options. Third time, I got a signing bonus instead of stock options. Much better deal because I don't think Cisco can maintain high $50's - $60/share until they'd vest and I get to keep the signing bonus after a year. And, the agreement said that the signing bonus was mine if I was LR'd, but prorated if I quit.

They sure won't be calling you for your grammar skills!

I went to a security competitor and immediately got a 30% increase on my base, then when I add on the uplift in commissions, it is a huge pay increase compared to what I had in GSSO. Then they thru in 180K in RSUs.

More broke than that. You see differences in the 10s of thousands between the same job just in different Business Units. CX pays they worst.

I have spoken to several people who gave left recently and the uplift is typically 30-50% more on the base and significant RSU's at a minimum

Now take my word for it: money isn't everything. More won't make you happier if you're not happy today unless of course the source of your discontentment is your job at Cisco.

About 25% more is accurate in my experience also. Some a little more due to inflation.

Cisco only makes competitive offers to new hires. People who have been around more than a few years are severely under water.

Based on what recent leavers have said, this would appear to be true. On average there’s a 25% uplift. Of course, they could be telling fibs…

Why competitor? Vaccine required? Remote work eligible? What space, TAC?
