Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

No communication

This is not about poor communication, this is about no communication at all with the manager. I have never experienced this in any of the companies I have worked for so far. The absolute lack of communication for some time now.

Is anyone else facing such a problem here and what should I do? I would not want to lose my job until I find an alternative, if this cessation of communication does not mean just that - losing my job.

Unless you are a total screwup, your direct supervisor does not have anything to do with whether you stay or go. That sort of thing is determined several layers above your boss's pay grade.

I once had a guy walk up to me and ask, "Do you know who I am?" to which I had to answer, "No..."

Turned out he was my supervisor at the time, flown in to our California office from Georgia. I "knew" him via meetings, but, at that time we didn't have pictures on our emails, and no Q yet, so I had never seen a picture of him.

Several of my bosses didn't talk much. If you are doing your job, and don't need a lot of direction, many bosses are just fine with leaving you alone. Personally, I preferred this, as they really don't have a whole lot of say in your future anyway, in most cases.

Nope. My manager HATES talking to his people. Hates having monthly one-on-ones. Our weekly meeting is about quotas and how we have or have not met them. And whatever the new administrative bs shoved down us. nothing else. don't even think he knows what half of us do. but that's the way all managers we've had for last 3-5 years seem to be.

Not uncommon but better than a micro manager. Milk the situation and don't complain

It's not unusual in AT&T to have an "absent" manager. I've experienced it more than a few times. I don't think you should think of it as being on a list to lose your job. If it makes you uncomfortable, ask your manager if you could set up monthly meetings to "touch base" and discuss the projects. If something were wrong, you'd hear about it. Keep in mind that sometimes no news is good news.

If he’s not talking to you your probably doing your job. You seem like you could be high performer high maintenance type that needs praise and admiration. If your not being talked to it’s likely cause youore delivering or they checked out. Get a hobby.

The absolute lack of communication for some time now.

Communications is our business, not our policy.

I don't see how this is possible, as managers are supposed to have regular one on ones. Ours are bi-weekly. If he's not doing those, he's not doing his job.

That said, if he's leaving you alone and you're not getting any flak...enjoy it.
He's probably one of those managers that was placed into his position with no regard for his people skills. You can't really be an effective manager without basic people skills. But there are a lot of them out there.

Your whole post sounds suspicious to me. “The” manager ??? I’ve NEVER had issues with reaching any of my supervising managers in 20 years. Have you tried picking up the phone? It’s that little rectangular thing that makes noise and you speak into it. Crazy huh! BTW, are you aware this board is focused on layoff specific topics and not about how to engage your manager (or any manager for that matter) ??

My prior manager would talk to me once a year to give me the yearly review and minuscule pay increase. Loved it!

Every time he would say his objective was to talk to me every month. Never happened :)

Current boss talks to me every month like clock work. Remembers every detail. Sucks!

So be careful what you wish for here at Toxic T.

Why do you care?
The best boss is a lazy one.
You have one of those.
Does the pay show up on time?
That's the only communication that matters.
The only metric to be concerned with.
Your goal should be your boss can't spell your name and those above him/her have never heard of you.
It's a job.
You work, they pay.
Nothing more.

What are you doing to initiate communication? Have you tried to call and set up a touchpoint meeting?
