Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

ASMs

Does the whole corporation use the skills inventory and advanced skills milestone process?

It seems to be yet another system that is dependent on who your friends are. You can complete all the requirements and hold multiple relevant roles, but you are still at the mercy of subjective whims of the tech spine gatekeepers. Why even bother fulfilling all the requirements if they aren’t really the requirements?

The caliber of people receiving their ASM each year seems to fluctuate wildly as well. Is that just a function of who is doing the validation for expert level that year?

Take it from someone who had an STP position as well as an ASM relatively early in their career.

These technical milestones and positions unfortunately are not saved from ExxonMobil’s toxic culture that selects the people with worst human traits for lowly to all the way to executives level management roles. The technical ladder positions are given based on perception of an individual rather than his or her expertise, intellectual depth and knowledge. We have some of the worst psychopaths in RTD drilling and subsurface who got ASMs, became team leads, STP-A, and supervisors. These were always the same culprit with a common trait that —- they would Spend all their time playing politics and sucking to a pathetic manager and who ever else that was above them.

In the early days of inception, STP-C’s and Chiefs were sort of knowledgeable technical people. During the last 7 years or so, it has become a dumping ground for failed management folks. So good luck. I haven’t met anyone who has quit EM.

I have been there done it all. Seen it all. And it is pathetic

In the past, STPs were what the acronym says, senior technical people that they had earn the organization respect. Now, they are cr---y appointed roles of nobodies
This is NOT the same company.

ASM is one of the most absurd systems but also fully characteristic of the new EM.
There are four levels at which your skills can be assessed: early career, advanced career and two other superior levels.
If you’re in a technical position, it’s all about the career stage you’re in. The other two, “superior” levels are strictly role dependent. Essentially, the only way to be there is to be in a “leadership” position.
Behavioral skills follow the same pattern. You think you have good presentation skills just because you’re articulate and know your field? But did you ever present at the corporate level ? So what if regular technical people never get asked to do that - it just means you don’t deserve the higher classification and shut up.
The most obscenely hypocritical aspect is that each skill comes with a “suggestion” for what level you’re on depending on career stage, and then you’re invited to “self-assess” your skills. What can you assess when there are rigid guidelines depending on career stage and role ?
This is absolute circular reasoning used by our “leaders” to justify their position: the leaders deserve high skill levels because they’re leaders, and they’re leaders because they have high skill levels.
A cesspool of profiteering and lies.

Former STP here. In the past it really depended on which advanced skill area you were in. Some were much more rigorous and tried to be fair. Others had definite biases. At least in the past, management and STC and skill area leaders would insert themselves into the processes for their friends and pets. That behavior really offended those of us trying to do the right thing and protect the integrity of the process.

Like any system, sometimes it works and sometimes not. It’s not any different elsewhere.
