QA Analysts title change will be only through Written exam and interview

My manager said for Senior Systems Quality Assurance Analysts to convert to Senior Software Engineers will be done only through a written exam and interviews process. He is not sure when, how and what happens if not selected etc., Is this acceptable? legal? moral? not sure.

gee, you people don't read the memos. as a software engineer, was pretty clear to me - people in QA are not going to be simply remapped when they don't have the skills. What a concept! they basically have to apply for the job of a software engineer and if they don't have the skills - eg. cannot code, you're not a software engineer and therefore, you don't belong in the software engineering job family. If you have the skills, what do you have to worry and why are you posting this? because you don't? And you're pi---d that they're doing something to prevent it?

HR rules that have been around for a long while - you're changing the job of a person so they cannot just simply remap you.

As a software engineer that honed my skills, I fully support this.

It sounds like most things with this management team, especially in technology, they talk big but have no real plan.

The seat of their pants must be wearing out by now.

An entire UAT group was evaporated… adding very little to software development and testing.

don't have answers but I had seen it done. At times entire sub groups within a departments. They would dissolve a department, create a new one, attach new job titles and ask staff to apply for the roles or they'd be moved to STAR/laid off.
Also at times large groups are shoved into another area to accommodate current needs for the 'bodies' and little consideration is given to peoples' skillset or career objective, or whether they are good fit for the job. Take it or leave it situation. Good luck!

I think this, like most everything, depends on your LOB.
