Thoughts on Zoom meetings?

Just curious how employees feel about constant Zoom/Video meetings. It was effective when WFH first started but it has become tiring for me and many of my coworkers just appear foolish. Distraction in the background, eating during meetings and so much more. It’s important at times to connect face to face but I am so done with it. Thoughts?

You shouldn’t be - tech were the ones who set the external only rule. The only ones who can’t use teams are regulated and overseas people and they shouldn’t be using Zoom either if they fall into those categories. Zoom is going away late summer so I’d get started on requesting Teams.

you can also use the online services in the same manner and just pay for it out of pocket for a quicker turn around.

If you don't feel like using video 24/7 use "Zoom Fatigue" as the reason you are not on video.

If you manager is an a** about it and pushes the issue, go to your primary care physician and request they write a letter with "Zoom Fatigue" as the diagnosis and that you be excused from video calls.

Take this letter and go to HR to request an official ADA accommodation.

Problem solved.

We use it daily in technology. Some of our employees cannot use Teams, and our execs do not like Skype so they insist on Teams.

Many - even though it's not supposed to be used internally. My group had set limits that it was used for external meetings only, but some how it was over-ridden.

Just the old guys way of peering over your shoulder to make sure you’re working. It’s just a controlling way to try to supervise adults. As with most things here, it’s bu-----t. There is zero need for Zoom meetings with 200 people. Zero.

Smear a little vaseline over the lens. Then you can turn on the video but claim issues with camera.

We all know that most Americans were mouth breathers-we're dealing with employees and their "managers" who don't know what they don't know as they simp for meetings after bs meetings for their US corporate overlords and oligarchs

Because it's not required? I have thick black tape over mine and its never coming off. I have got tape over the mic ports as well and I use a headset while in a call, then unplug it when I'm not.

The challenge with eating is that when you’re in meetings all day long, you have to eat sometime. I turn my camera off while I’m eating. I do have colleagues from other groups who have never once turned their camera on and I wonder how they get away with it.

What is any different than working in a cube farm with 300 people around you? You all need to visit STL campus for a full pen style arena...

Smart leadership knows people have things going on. Smart leadership doesn't require cameras on or mics to remain unmuted.

So don't turn your camera on. It's not required. Zoom is going bye bye but Teams video meetings are here to stay.

Do you have an obese, bloviating, drunken manager who talks with his mouth full and belches like he’s in a contest, and the prize is more beer?

No sympathy here.

I agree.

In a small setting of 2 - 4 people, it works fine as you are directly interacting with each other.

But in a larger setting when many people are just sitting there listening, it's distracting.

I keep my video off unless I'm in a 1:1 or a small team meeting.

In organizations with strong leadership things like eating, background distractions, camera off, etc., aren’t permitted on zoom calls. Zoom is great. Leadership is bad. And that created bad corporate culture. IMO it will take the better part of a decade (yes, 10 more years) to right the ship.

Participate with the video off, but be present.
