Ford EV needs taxpayer support

Only way Jim and Bill’s vision will work. After Rivian write down, Ford will need government funding to make the charade work.

For over a year now, automakers and lawmakers have pushed for new EV incentive programs that would effectively replace the old, outdated $7,500 tax credit and make it more affordable for people to make the switch from ICE vehicles to all-electric models. These potential EV incentive programs are also crucial for Ford as it aims to spend $50 billion to boost its annual EV production to two million units by 2026, lofty goals that have some Wall Street analysts a bit skeptical. That’s precisely why one Ford exec is pushing Congress to get something done in that regard, according to Automotive News.

“We can see the environmental need and customer demand for innovative, high-performance electric vehicles, but if we are to be world leaders in this space we must move quickly,” Bob Holycross, Ford’s vice president of sustainability, environment, and safety engineering told members of a subcommittee within the House Energy and Commerce Committee. “To be clear, if U.S. policies are not efficient and effective in this transition, we risk being outpaced by global competitors like China and Europe.”

“This isn’t about a long-term ambition. The inflection is now,” Holycross told Automotive News. “We are past the tipping point, quite frankly, in terms of where this movement is, and it’s so important not just to be able to meet the overwhelming demand that we’ve seen from our customers and small businesses up and down the retail and commercial market, but so that we really make sure that this all happens in the U.S. for our competitiveness and security.”

Ford – which recently announced that it would be splitting its business into two entities, Model e for EVs and Ford Blue for ICE vehicles – is in the midst of a major transformation, while the company’s CEO, Jim Farley, has met with White House officials to discuss new EV incentives on numerous occasions. At the same time, President Joe Biden has been pushing EV adoption as well, recently signing an executive order directing federal agencies to stop buying ICE-powered vehicles by 2027, setting a goal of achieving a 50 percent EV mix in new vehicle sales by 2030, and rolling out a new EV charging action plan that aims to significantly boost charging infrastructure in the coming years.

@gxq+1fFlbQzd so true, thanks for reminding us to not look down on the less fortunate. it's easy to do. there is a great old news story about how the big 3 got tariffs applied to foreign cars in the 80's to let them catch up, and then the big 3 execs awarded themselves huge bonuses due to the increased profits. the reagan admin let 'em have it in the press, that's for sure. not sure if they gave back the money tho. probably not. wait until you hear about the secondary subsidies: paying for roads, subsidizing the petro industry, etc.

No, it doesn't. In fact, no EV should have government 'handouts'. They only way to get widespread acceptance & use if they are as good or better than the current ICE solution in terms of usability and affordability -which at the moment they are not.

For too many people, due to the need to complete change the usage patterns of how they drive currently and manage their vehicle (i.e. need to plan trips around location of chargers, need allot for time to charge itself, no plan on how to make battery pack replacement affordable - a guy is Norway literally blew up his 2012 Tesla Model S when he found out it would cost over $22,000 to replace the battery pack), EV's just don't make sense at the moment. Just look at the demographics current for EV ownership.....EV;s are rarely the only vehicle they owner. In fact, in the US, it is usually their 3rd vehicle.

The day might come when EV's pass ICE - but more people think they just might not make it, include this guy (read prediction #7): https://scottlocklin.wordpress.com/2020/01/27/ten-predictions-for-2030/

Ford knows the govt handouts worked out well for the New GM. The New GM went from the worst financial balance sheet in the entire auto industry to the best balance sheet in the entire industry. The new GM went right back to spending wildly (even now giving 200% bonuses, obviously because of results - sarcasm for those who can't figure this out on your own). Of course, Ford wants in on the govt gravy train!! Why do actual work when you can have the taxpayer fund your company? The result is the Big 3 auto workers are now just govt welfare workers. The only difference is that the Big 3 auto workers are way overpaid (especially the ones working from home - wink, wink. At least the UAW workers show up at work.), Big 3 workers get to live in the best neighborhoods, and get to talk hypocritically about other people that live in the not so desirable neighborhoods getting govt EBT cards to buy groceries.

Well the govt is only $30T in debt - and growing. This debt should work out well for our kids and grandkids that you all got to go on fancy vacations and buy bigger houses and nice cars on their dime! But you are good people - yeah right. And even after reading this, most big 3 workers will still keep complaining about the person with the EBT card in front of them at the grocery store.

For anyone considering a job at Ford - please don't! The company is very bad - just read all the other threads on this website. And you will become a hypocrite about govt handouts to boot.

People always whine about government 'handouts' to the average working Joe and the poor but never to corporations.
