Thread regarding IBM layoffs

Some WH employees will not transition

I do not have numbers and it does not affect me, but a small group of people have started commenting in Slack that they have been told to look within IBM for a new job. There are probably more who are not talking.

They have a deadline of the TOB to the spinoff. But since no one knows when that is, only rumors, it is creating more questions then answers.

No one really knows what will happen if they do not find a new job either, only that they are not transitioning or being offered a different job at the spinoff.

There are a lot of folks not transferring over. 80% of my team will NOT be going to the new company. People are not being provided with any information about post transfer if they can’t secure a role internally. HR is also not helping with placement.

HR confirmed today that IBM will not provide terminated WH employees with any outplacement services. Previous RAs included access to Right Management, Jobscan etc. None for us. It's bad enough to be RA'd after 30+ years with the company, but pretty slimy of IBM to not provide outplacement support or any severance commitment.

Those of us in the WH office in Ann Arbor, the few who are transitioning, are being told that we have to completely vacate the building by July, without being told where our new office will be.

Bear in mind, this was once a huge WH site (100 Phoenix Drive), with ~1,500 employees back in the Truven days. Does Francisco Partners even have offices in the Metro Detroit area? Maybe they expect us to hang out at WeWork?

I'll miss the free cappuccino and espresso machines.

Given that WH was an independent division, I would expect the acquiring company to choose carefully of the employees available for transfer. For example, WH most likely has a CFO for the division. The acquiring company most likely has that position already occupied. Go down the “overhead” positions (think support) for a division, and I would expect a lot of those folks to not be picked up. This would extend to management as the acquiring company most likely runs a leaner operation. IBM is notorious for over staffing

So far absolutely no outplacement support for the many WH employees who are "Blue Team" members (i.e., not being offered positions in the spin-off), aside from being given the "opportunity" to apply for internal IBM positions. IBM appears to be trying to dodge treating this as an RA. No severance information, no separation agreement, no resume services, no career/outplacement counseling.

"TOB was said to be 5/31" TOB, or Transfer-of-Business ... to whom? To whom, are they transferring Watson Health? WHAT is the name of this company?

What are we suppose to tell customers? So far I've seen no specifics at all.

Sounds like it’s the old 90/30 RA style
You get 90 days notice and 30 days severance if you can’t find an internal job.
TOB was said to be 5/31

Glad I jumped ship when I did. Still in touch with former WH colleagues and they tell me what a chaotic mess it has become.

And btw, what will the new name be?? Surely they can't use the word "Watson" in their name ... right?

After a multi-million dollar exhaustive competition among the top marketing genius firms, the new name has been decided:

Watsonson
