I'm debating whether moving to a smaller company after many years spent here would be a good idea. Some tell me it’s a great idea, and some think that I shouldn’t do it.
I want some change, I’m worn out from working here, but maybe it would be a too big a change.

You’re not going to find a larger company to work for, so your choice is smaller company or retire.
@6eji: Your comment is unfounded and ridiculous. There are just as many unproductive, unmotivated generations like Gen X, Gen Y, Millenials as there are Boomers regardless of what large corporation you might survey, that is IF you had any interest in actual data. If you think the Boomer demographic has less interest in keeping current with technologies and trends; think again. That is especially not the case with professional managerial level employees.
But it sounds like your real complaint has more to do with your resentment for employees who happened to have joined the company when pensions were still available. It’s inappropriate to stereotype an entire generation of workers simply because you think they’re receiving a better retirement deal than you.
The non-pension employees are like indentured servants to the pension employees. The pension employees are Boomers that refuse to modernize or learn new things. They lean on the younger, non-pension employees to get all of the work done, while they sit back on their laurels and complain about not getting enough money.
There are very few companies that continue to offer pensions; only a hand full of businesses continue that practice. But to say employees are indentured servants is an obvious dishonest, distorted comment. Average annual salaries, before bonuses or overtime (if a non-exempt employee) range from $55k to $105k, depending on position, education. As far as the number of people employed by ATT, there are currently more than 200k employees across the globe.
The earlier poster blatantly stated a number of falsehoods. Remember, many of the comments found on this forum are simply untruthful intended to harm ATT’s reputation.
They don't offer pensions. Now, if you're one of the very few working at AT&T, you should run. AT&T is a company for pensioners. Everyone else is like an indentured servant to them. It's not worth the headache.
I worked for a smaller company before AT&T, sucked. Cut bennies and vacation whenever they felt like it.
I would suggest taking up panning for gold on BLM land. That’s a company of 1 and less BS. (BLM is Bureau of Land Management) public lands managed by federal government.
As one other poster stated, ATT is a huge corporation that can offer talented employees a lot of career options. If you’re dissatisfied with you current job, do the research to find something you want to do. Consider relocating, if that’s an option. If your skill set needs upgrading, by all means work to enhance those proficiencies.
Remember, there are few companies that have a global footprint like T, so explore how to move forward internally, first.

After working for AT&T, there are literally only a countable number of companies that are larger, so yes you will in all likelihood work for a smaller company.
It is a great idea. so many better managed companies out there than att you won't look back.
My part of AT&T is very much like a smaller company, depends on where you work I guess.
AT&T is a big company. Different divisions within the company are like separate companies. Depending on where you're located, there could be a different job available within AT&T. That way you're not throwing away extra weeks of vacation that have been earned by years of service at AT&T.
That's why when I hear people posting about AT&T, like it is one entity, I wonder if they know AT&T. Even within the same division, a different job could be a refreshing change and an opportunity to broaden skill sets.

My experience with smaller companies has been that OSHA regulations are practically non-existent or not followed with impunity, power rests with a few buddies of the owner, you're either in like flynn with the good old boy network or you aren't if you have differing political opinions, promotions are few and far between, pay raises are small, and your immediate supervisor has the final say on basically everything concerning your employment. No thanks.
Stop over analyzing. If you're unhappy, leave and try something else.
