What's the future for IBM Dev Labs in China?

Qxw The issue isn’t the theft, but the repercussions of trying to rectify the theft. In China the state owns the patents and trademarks thus there is no one to sue. In India the corporate or individual entity owns the trademarks and patents thus if someone walks off with them or copies them, you have legal recourse. Yes labor rates factor in, but ask yourself why doesn’t IBM do any pure research in China Because they can’t own any IP developed there

I talked to a Z guy in Shanghai and he said they already had access to the Z's code (that was 3 years ago). So that make sense for a Developer, but all IBM was interested in was the low labor costs and didn't think someone would steal the IP.
India might respect the IP, but those guys will change jobs for a few more Rupees across the street. I've seen that for myself....

A good portion of development has moved to India. Putting politics aside, IBM will move to where trademark and patents can be enforced. And where labor rates run at 25% of the rest of the world. That can happen in India, where as in China the state owns everything. Ask the first movers who went to China if they are happy? They all got cheap labor, BUT lost their intellectual property. No innovative company will risk that again as 5-10 years later they have to compete against their own Chinese made copy cats
