Thread regarding IBM layoffs

Relocation to One Madison Avenue

I don't like the idea of relocating employees from ten different addresses into one. Thoughts?

Hi from Slovakia. Same stuff is going here where IBM is spending a great amount of money for building a brand new building that is not needed. And they have one big location with three smaller ones. I do not understand why they do not move all the employees to the biggest location.

Large companies engage in a relocation / consolidation project for a number of reasons. One reason is to force older more expensive employees to leave. Satellite offices allow people to work in suburbs but central offices in a city require people to move down town where the costs to live our not feasible for an older employee with a family. Why buy a 3 bedroom condo in NYC when you can buy a 3 bedroom house in the suburbs for 1/3rd of the cost.

When the older folks have left and they want to attract younger talent they will once again open up satellites and rinse and repeat.

@hoa,

When we worked in the office previously there was nothing but people talking.
Fun hours, blood drives, pot lucks, bbq's which impeded on the real work.

Well I think you need to be more open minded and to combat all these negative posts I'm going to post one positive post for every negative post I see. How about carpooling or cabbing with your coworkers? And pack your lunch? Imagine how more productive you can be if you spend more time together. We can do this!

"You can be a lot more agile when everyone is in one place"

The traffic jams during the rush hours prove your point.
Lunchtime is funtime too when waiting in those long lines.

Agile and colocation is truly dinobaby logic.
It's no wonder the stock is in the pits.

It is totally in line with IBM office/location consolidation that started years ago. There are "anchor" locations and "satellite" locations. All recent college hires MUST report to an anchor location because the satellite ones will be closed once the older population at them (who will NOT MOVE) retire or leave the company.

The satellite location I am at recently renewed their office lease FOR TWO YEARS and ALL YOUNG new hires MUST report to POK. I am retiring this year (along with at least 6 others that I know of) but the writing is on the wall. It is also clear that a mandate to "return to the office place" at least 2 days a week is probably on the way.

It’s totally the right decision. Why have 9 mostly old and underused offices in random locations all around the city…vs one purpose built, new, branded office.

Great office, great location for commuters. I’m shocked there is so much negativity here. Folks must have never been to cubicle he-l at most of our current NY offices.

Why is everyone here so negative? You can be a lot more agile when everyone is in one place. IBM has so much potential!

Consolidating 9 offices into one is most likely lowering the cost of IBM leases by 1/2. Just add up the floor space of the 9 offices then compare it to the new office. Less floor space = less rent. Then add onto that the incentive of being an anchor tenant It was a smart move IF you are going to have offices
