Excellent article: The 9 to 5 Schedule Should Be the Next Work Pillar to Fall

(abridged)

Thirty percent of workers around the world surveyed last year said they would consider seeking a new job if their current employer required them to return to the office full time. Millennials are especially resistant. In response to the Covid pandemic, PepsiCo, Meta and General Motors, among others, have incorporated remote work into their corporate cultures.

But in a truly flexible workplace, people would control not just where they work but also when.

“I think it’s really a shame that more companies don’t take advantage of it,” said Azad Abbasi-Ruby, the senior market research analyst at DuckDuckGo. He added, “We get so much done, and I think a lot of it has to do with this flexibility, letting people work when they’re most productive.”

If more employers truly embraced flexible schedules and allowed employees to work at the times that are best for them, experts say, the benefits would be a healthier and more productive, creative and loyal work force.

Our early-bird-gets-the-worm ethic often gets applied to office workers who could do their work just as effectively on their own time. A 2014 study by Christopher Barnes of the Foster School of Business at the University of Washington found that supervisors who are early risers perceive employees who arrive later as less conscientious, regardless of job performance. Other studies show that workers are more creative and leaders more charismatic when they are not sleep deprived and when their work and biological sleep schedules align.

Dr. Pang, a technology forecaster, suggested that employers should think less about time spent working and more about quality. He has identified about 130 employers, including Kickstarter and the government of Iceland, that have adopted a four-day, reduced-hour week without cutting salaries or sacrificing productivity.

”The most impressive, most professional person is not the one who needs 80 hours a week to finish the job,” he said. “It’s the person who can finish it in 30 hours.”

I really love the idea that work schedules will be more flexible in the future. I would love to be 100% remote and I could set my work hours to be whatever I want. But, I fear that all of this is just talk and once everybody gets back in the office things will quickly go back to the status quo. All this talk of wanting to WFH and being more productive will just evaporate. Everyone will slowly forget all the great benefits of WFH. I hope I am wrong and people will continue to push for more flexibility and these companies start offering more flexibility.

Agree wholeheartedly. When you cut the B.S. office stuff out, it’s much easier to get things accomplished. So many time wasters at the office. Everyone asks how my monthly numbers are so high - it’s because I’m not spending half of my day blathering to kiss a$$ and making trips to coffee shops or smoke breaks. They are high because I’m 100% into my work. Of course when we go back I worry those numbers will drop significantly, but I’m hoping SP and the other dinosaurs come to their senses and realize that working in close proximity does not mean working together, and collaboration happens over digital tools a majority of the time anyway. It’s time for change and we need leaders who can lead this change, not try to claw their way back to the early 80’s.

I have been saying this for years! The Boys Club comes in early (to avoid household responsibilities) and they talk sm--k, go get coffee, go on and on about last night’s game, suck up to the boss, hang out in the bathroom for a half hour and then begin working 2 hours after arriving. They are hailed for being team players. And yet the employee who comes in 30 minutes after The Boys Club and begins work immediately and finishes early is chastised for not taking their work seriously.
