I left XOM and my new employer has a lot of people who work remotely. My group is fairly consolidated and works together in the office. I do have to say, having so many people working remotely makes things much more difficult. Technology only goes so far. It's difficult to quantify the amount of information and context that is communicated informally. There are many times that we will overhear conversations with each other and someone else chimes in with a very useful bit of info. With team project work, where we rely on the individual expertise of each person, working remotely makes it difficult and our company has a big collaboration problem. Too many people working in silos, because they just aren't aware of things to familiarize themselves with what they don't know that they don't know. Then, you have engineers trying to monitor a plant from half the country aware via only instrumentation, second guessing everything the field hands do, and only going to site when given a direct order to.

I would argue simple jobs can be done remotely, but not when there's inherently a largely collaborative type of work. Engineering functions are predominantly collaborative.

Definitely don't need a CEO, that's for sure.

Not so fast. Only clueless managers believe that if a job can be done from home it simply means that anybody can do it.

That totally makes sense. However, 2/3 of the jobs will still require showing up for work
