Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

It looks like being a yes man is the only way to survive at XOM

I sometimes wonder if I’m paid for my skills, knowledge and work ethics, or to agree with whatever comes out of my manager’s mouth. Whenever I expressed my true opinion I was ignored. What does that teach us?

You can point out when other people are wrong. You need to be tactful about it and not throw people under the bus when you do it though. This might mean talking to someone outside of a meeting not making someone look like an id--t in a meeting. Common sense really. Treat others how you want to be treated. I’ve said no or disagreed many times without any problems. It is all about how you do it.

Manager: "We're a team. We need to hear open and honest input from everyone."

Translation: "I'm the boss. Don't offer your opinion if it differs from mine, unless you want to be on the PIP list."

Working for a corporation often means that you’ve got to fit in AND be productive. Some never get that. If you have damaged your EM career then the best thing is to move on. Don’t fret about it, plenty of others have done the same. Lesson learned. Good luck to you!

Only been around exxon for a few years, came from a different company. Was ranked at the very top. A few months ago, I expressed an opinion in a meeting counter to my boss (because it was the truth) and I've totally lost all the support of my boss. One time I did this and the attitude is totally changed, as if I didn't kick a-s and save his a few times during the previous months.

It was all good when we generally agreed. Now things are rocky.
