This is not specific to Exxon though. I noticed this elsewhere where I worked. I find it amusing when people try to emphasize that they don’t care for their job here anymore because it’s long been clear to everyone that this is no longer a place to grow a great career, but in fact they still take their job more than seriously.

Lots of EMIT people like this, which in my view compounds the problem.
When they continually downsize the population and outsource to MSP, the remaining employees want to be heroes and keep everything in good working order when the MSP fails. The only thing senior management sees as result of this is that their plans to lower costs are successful and they can pat themselves on the back for great leadership. I believe they still aren’t done with cuts, and will draw a new line at some point that they will then decide is the new “100% staffed” level when the cycle begins anew.
Everyone needs a purpose in their life. People you talk to at EM tend to be (or at least, tended to be) more motivated and competitive than the average citizen. It's normal to want to take pride in your work even if you're frustrated with your job.
