Thread regarding Ford layoffs

Peloton: A cautionary tale

Peloton, ki----g it in the virtual bike market. Came out with a poorly designed treadmill that started ki----g and hurting people. Just laid off 3K tech workers.

Ford should take note. The recent GM EV fire at their proving grounds shows that these new technologies are not perfect. Go all in on EV, and not get it right, and Ford will never make it to their 125th birthday.

And for you retirees that think it won't affect you..................

Treadmills have had endcaps to prevent pull unders for years. That Peloton released one with an open end, and then didn't have the proper sensors to prevent kids specifically, (it happened to more than one child by the way, and several pets too!) from getting pulled under was the problem. You can argue about the safety of treadmills in general that that is fine, but Peloton's design was flawed and the bad press ki---d them.

Yes their bikes are overpriced. Yes the data collection is problematic. Yes the subscription to keep the full functionality of the devices is not a great approach (HINT: listen to this Ford management!). But the lessons to be learned are there. Stay true to your core, and do it well, and be successful. Branch into another business because you are scared of competitors, rush things to market to beat those competitors (Lightning vs Cyber Truck), and you run the risk of major issues.

Peloton was ki----g it due to the coof when there were lockdowns, limited hours and inconveniences at fitness centers. Now that things are getting back to normal (more or less), people are actually going back to the gyms instead of working out at home.

Now? No one is buying these overpriced stationary bikes and treadmills. I even considered buying a bike but once I saw the price I noped out of there.

Peloton's lack of validation due diligence is not unlike the Ford Pinto fuel tank design, Firestone tire debacle, Takata air bag fiasco, etc. Internal documents reveal these issues were well-known but profit was elevated above responsible product design.

Peloton is harvesting and selling data from connected e-machines so that must be a great idea.

What is happening with Peloton has nothing to do with a kid getting sucked under a treadmill and everything to do with people realizing that actually maybe a fancy exercise bike with a screen slapped on the front doesn't actually warrant valuing the company that makes it at $70 billion.

First off, people have been getting sucked under treadmills for years - nothing new. I've actually been thrown off one before, when I could not keep up. Who knows id the laying off of 3k tech workers is related, could be simply they have reached maturity and no longer need so many people.

There is a point about the tech no being mature yet, which is why Ford and the other old line vehicle manufactures haven't been following the Tesla model of putting stuff out there and letting the customers try it first......however the pressure is mounting to do that, so tike will tell if Ford, GM, et al. will resist that temptation or not.

If the retiree planned & prepared well, it really should not impact them. It started by taking the pension in cash first off, then also making sure you have your own savings via 401K to weather any storms, and when you retire make sure all the 401k funds are not still in the stock market....the normal stuff you should do as you retire.

Who said retirees don't think it will affect them? We wish we were there to stop the madness.
