Commuter benefits are non-refundable when the axe falls

Just a heads up for anyone getting sh1tcanned, all commuter benefits are considered non-refundable and BNY closes your account and takes the money. Didn't see that footnote in the quarterly earnings. Stay classy BNY.

I'm claiming that as a tax writeoff. BNY will put that down as income. Thanks Todd.

Yes, the benefits center walked me through this. Instead of purchasing a pass directly through them, it is best to get a pre-tax amount added to the commuter benefit card provided by the firm. Then, immediately buy your pass, tickets, etc, so that the commuter benefit card balance drops to zero. In Pittsburgh, I take the value from my commuter benefit card and “buy” stored value on my personal public transportation “connect card”.

Yes. Put this on your to-do list too:

  • Flex Spending accounts - You can only submit expenses that happened prior to your last working day.
  • Transit cards become inactive after your last working day
  • Redeem any WOW points
  • You don't get paid for Personal Days, so take those if you have earned them
  • Carryover vacation days can only be taken in the 1st quarter, do use them if you have them
  • You will get paid for any vacation days that you have earned. But if you take more than you have accrued, they can charge you for them.
